the end sign on some R160 why does the circle surrounding the route designation on some trains appear to be incomplete? does this mean the train is nearing the end of the route? or starting?

Thier LEDs. your not going to get a tottaly solid ring due to the simple fact you've got all those little lights.

Are you talking about in the pictures? I forgot why exactly..but I know it has to do with the camera and not the train itself.

Underground you can take clearer pictures of the whole circle, aboveground it is not as easy.

Because of the longer exposure.

I'm the LAST person who should be attempting to explain this, but the phenomena you're describing has to do with the camera, not the end sign.

The end signs on the R-160s have a "refresh rate" that's too slow for most cameras. Or too fast, I forget which. What happens is, when you take a picture with your camera using a short exposure, the end sign's circle will appear "incomplete". But, if you take a picture using a longer exposure, the sign will appear complete. The effect is completely unnoticeable to the naked eye.

A similar effect occurs when taking a picture of the end sign of a Bombardier R-142, except it occurs with the route number, and not the circle.

To be a little more specific: The LED lights in the sign blink on and off. The blink rate is too fast to be seen, but when you take a photo with an extremely short exposure time, the camera will catch some of the lights off and the sign will appear incomplete. If you're taking pictures underground, you're probably using a longer exposure time, and can catch all of the lights on, resulting in a full sign.

In "Auto" mode, yes. But in "Manual" mode you could get the whole circle aboveground or underground.

Error qoute, did that even come out right?

Too bad none of the letter routes now use the diamond. If the <Q> were to ever come back, then there'd be a use for it.
