Nope ... the guy laughs hysterically saying, you think you're going to get me to sign off on an ABD because the damned BOX fell out? Crank HARDER, boy! Tell it to Coney, now get outta here. :)

Now if you had a broken wheel or stuck brakes, then your train had a problem. Heh.

Hi Larry,
I remember working the Sea Beach Line in the early 1980s and the lead motor had numerical route signs. I ran back to Coney Island with a #4 Coney Island sign on the front route and destination signs. I got a lot of strange looks from the passengers at each station I entered. I guess I could have been written up but too late now. Ha, ha.
Best wishes,
Bob

Yes, I had quite a time changing it from "M" to "MM" on 27 December 1969 whilst it was in "M" shuttle service (the south motor) and I changed all the letter signs from "M" to "MM" and Myrtle to 57th Street. But I only had to go one letter down on the roll.

One of its bulkhead destination signs was balky in 2002 during Subtalk Day at Shoreline. AFAIK the route signs are OK.

The only time I ever fiddled with a route sign on a revenue train was on a BMT standard. I can't remember what it was set to, but it wasn't 14th St. L'c'l. So I started cranking away while my mother was having a conniption and stopped when it got to Local.

When the original post Chrystie Nassau/Brighton service started in 1967, it ran from 168/Jamaica to Brighton Beach as a Brighton Local and carried the designation "QJ." That servce utilized a mix of R-27s/30s and R-16s. D trains operated to Stl full time as Brighton expresses. Probably because of the aforementioned passenger complaints, especially the R-16s notoriously poor car heating, the R-16s were transfrerred to the RR and ultimately the EE. Due to switching problems at Brighton Beach caused by the Ds and QJs haveing to cross in front of each other, the next pick, the QJs were routed to Stl and the Ds terminated at BBC when they operated express and Stl when they operated local and the QJs stopped running.

You know..I wondered why they never used that service..

It most likely would have ran during the Middays when the KK didn't run..

That TOO would be out of title ... "lubrication inspector" was likely a job title. You were only allowed to turn valves, lift shoes, wrap duct tape around rubber or copper or other "move it" kinda things. Adjustment and repair though was definitely a no-no even if all it needed was a squirt of juice. You could replace certain bulbs, but not others. REAL nit-picky although back in my day, depending on who was on RCI duty, you could do more, you could do less. Some would yell at you for picking newspaper out of the door. Others would hand you a blowtorch and "supervise." :)

Among other nicer toys. But like I said, depended on the particular RCI. On really bad days, they'd tell you "do this" and scoot, next day they'd argue you were taking their job away. Psychotic Teeyay. :)

Yup, I agree, although I did like the R10's too. But I really loved the green. Interestingly, when the R16's turned up 'missing" (remember there was no SubTalk back then to tell you that things were being retired), I thought they were out getting their green paint scheme like the R10's.....who woulda thought they were out getting cut up instead.

That December 1986 NY Times article about the demise of 6321 mentions that the R-16s were scheduled to go out of service soon. I'd say being put out of their misery was more like it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the R-10s didn't show up on Myrtle/Chambers since I think that the reason they were sent to the Eastern was to qualify BMT Eastern M/M on SMEE equipment in preparation for the delivery of the R-16s.
