So some officers are still essentially enforcing a rule that doesn't exist. Now, the agency says, that's going to change, so straphangers, click away. Thanks, Bob. your pal, Fred |

Whilst at Newark Penn Station this evening, I was tapped on the elbow by a C/R of the NJT 7:bleeblah train and was told politely AND courteously "Sir, you can not take pictures..." I responded with "Hello Sir, I have a NJT Photo Permit" and displayed it to the C/R whom then took three seconds to glance at the photo pass and reply "OK, Thank you." Then he went back to his platform position and I went back to filming.. (my FIRST shoot-stopping encounter) I applaud this C/R for his COURTEOUS approach and wish some of youse would have had similar experiences.. Yeh, NJT may have rescinded the photography pressure and restriction altogether, but I gotta give the C/R guy credit--- he handled his approaching me in a manner that would put TA BRASS to pasture... |

I'll second that. And as a note, you don't really need the permit anymore per this letter: http://www.railpace.com/njt-letter.jpgThat said, NJT has done an excellent job calling off their cops. I've only had one problem with some NJT laborers working at Bay Head, and then a copy of that letter cleared up the issue right away. I just wish somebody could tell NY Waterways that MARSEC 1 is no excuse for forbidding photography from their midtown dock. |

I know about the letter.Whether the C/R knew about the discontinuance of the policy is not of concern.. I'm most appreciative for the MANNER in which he handled the inquiry. (after hearing teh horror stories some of you guys experienced, I'd wanted to vouch that there are indeed some good peep out in NJT whom actually know how to be POLITE and CONSIDERATE in their approaches to rail photogs...) NJT could teach MTA some things mos' def! (ye author is APPRECIATIVE for the C/R and is not raising issue of rights of policy). |

So this is the reason you sent in the formal request to the LIRR for their photo policy? It was part of the potential lawsuit? |

No, I had no intention of going that far initially. It was after I received the LIRR's reply, stating that I had to let them know in advance when, where and for how long I would be taking photos, that I contacted the NYCLU and NY1 (who had already been contacted by several other people who had been hassled when trying to take photos of the LIRR). After meeting with them, I decided to add my name to the list of potential plaintiffs. Also, I did send a letter to the LIRR Public Affairs Dep't (via certified mail - it was delivered to them 3/7) stating that I intended to take pictures this Saturday March 18 at certain LIRR stations, but I have not yet received a reply. Given what has happened since then - their letter to the NYCLU - I might not get a reply now. |

If and when I get it, I will post it to my website for you to make a copy.By the way, I have never had any problems with taking pictures at GCT - there's so many tourists doing the same thing! But Penn Station is another story. |

Yes, you can take all the photos you want, no problem, as long as you are not on the platforms. A couple years ago I went down to the lower level for the first time and as I was about to walk down to track level I came upon two cops and a police dog. They wouldn't allow me to "be there." Now that I have a monthly ticket and this article, I'd like to start wandering the platforms getting photos of trains. I assume we can now do the same thing on the LIRR platforms at Penn Station. |

I used to always take photos on the platforms of GC, but of course that's a while back.Penn Station was always a little tricky, even back in the 90's. The LIRR section was no problem, but Amtrak platforms always required you to have a ticket. What I would do in the 90's was go to that back passageway that led to some of the Amtrak platforms from the LIRR platforms. Once on the platforms of Amtrak, you were never bothered, but getting down there wasn't always easy. Grand Central was never a problem either upstairs or downstairs. That's what caught me by such surprise a year or two ago when I tried to take some photos on the platforms at GC. Within seconds a worker was on top of me. |
