the pictures didnt come out that well but there were lots of people and well bars in the way.

the video monitor thing seems real cool, they kept showing this 30 second clip on loop of a waterfall. they said it would be used for information. i can see them using that to sell advertising sooner than later.

Anyone know why/how the train was signed as L on the outside but had the A strip maps and the scrolling route ID next to the strip map? I wouldn't have thought that would be possible.

It was only a preview of what we may see in the future and it cycled through random images along with the different routes appearing at random. There is no reason why some people are getting a fit over that, relax...Perhaps the two items aren't interchangable for now but that may not be such a bad thing when you think about it.

This I found, upon asking the tachnicians, was why they omitted the tri color LED sign in the window (back to back with the external sign). The LCD screen basically replaces that.

The R-160B only had the (L) train programmed into the display/announcement system. And only from Manhattan to Canarsie.

The "FIND" interior display wasn't connected to the train's computer, and was showing the (A) line simply for display purposes. The LCD television screen, likewise, was alternating between various train lines, and some Japanese commercials. No sound.

I like the way they look. (Remember, I always have liked the R143's too though).
The railfan in me of course loves the R42's, and even nostalgically, as I road them since I was a kid, before they were even rebuilt, and looked like crap. However, they are getting worn. It's time. the only reason I would want them to stay is because "we go a long way back together", so they are nostalgic to me, and of course, the obvious, it will be the end of the railfan window on the Eastern Division. Yes a TERRIBLE event, and I obviously will hate that.
But from an aesthetic point of view, I think the R160's look pretty sharp. I think they will be great for the passengers.
The only thing making me "hate" them is the railfan and loss of nostalgia aspect. From a purely passnger standpoint (which is the reason the subway operates), I can't find anything wrong with them.

I never had a problem with the R143 seats (and I think the R160s ones will be the same), although of course remember some complaining about them here in the past. (I am assuming they are similar to the R143's, the photos in this thread don't show the seats, so I don't know if they are different). I have only seen exterior photos of the R160's, and the ones above.
If the interiors are similar to the R143's, aside from the strip map changes, I think the r143's have much better interiors than the R142's for example, which have all the ombience of a hospital emergency room.

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
The seats are identical. There's a bump. If the bump lines up with the bump in your back, fine. If it doesn't, ouch.

Watch seated passengers. If they're slouching in the seat, they're probably trying to avoid the bump. If they're shifting position every few minutes, they're probably trying to find the least uncomfortable position. I usually slouch, but that makes my feet tired, since I'm putting most of my weight on them. Might as well stand.

Which brings us to another problem: the HVAC system. At least on the R-142's (I don't ride the R-142A's or R-143's often), there are very strong (and loud!) fans, but the cooling power is weak. If you happen to be positioned where the air hits you, it feels cold (perhaps too cold). But if you don't, and it's a hot day, I hope you don't mind it hot and stuffy, because that's how it will feel. Seated passengers in the middle of the car get HVAC. Most standing passengers do not, nor does anybody near either end of the car. Compare that to the R-42, where you don't feel a strong gust of wind anywhere, but it's simply cool in the entire car, even at the ends.

Shall I continue? How about needlessly abrupt acceleration and deceleration? How about crystal clear and ultra-loud (well, not so loud on the R-143, but very loud on the R-142) announcements about all the ordinary stuff that most passengers would rather tune out, but barely audible announcements when the C/R has to say something manually, typically about some sort of service change that the passengers might want to know about? (It seems that one of the fans points directly into the mike! Again, that might be fixed on the R-160, but it's a problem on the R-142.) How about the defective airbag suspension system (again, on the R-142; it may be fixed on the R-160) that produces a bouncier ride than on the cars that are being replaced?

Yes, a lot of passengers will cheer when the cars come in, but a lot of passengers automatically prefer new over old, either because they blindly think new is always better than old or because they're happy whenever anybody pays attention to them (the Westinghouse effect). But are the new cars an actual improvement for the passengers? That's not so clear. I can tell you that, as a daily passenger, I'm quite glad that my line still runs R-62A's, which I find meets my needs as a passenger much better than the R-142's across the platform on the 2.

As mentioned, the R142's are much brighter than the R143's inside. The R143's are much more aesthetically pleasing inside.
