Tuscarora Almanac for March 9

1973 – from The Book of Wrecks

There was a rear end collision at Newburgh Junction on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad between piggyback freight CX-99 and a passenger deadhead X-51.
The area was in deep fog and the crew of the passenger train missed the stop signal and proceeded up the Graham Line. They stopped the train and were struck from behind by the CX-99 freight.
The consist of the CX-99 was two U-33C engines 3305 in the lead) and about fifty five cars. The X-51 had a U-33CH and five Comet I passenger cars; 1758, 1755, 1607, 1522 (cab) and 1502 (cab).
U-33C 3305 and all five of the Comets were damaged beyond repair. The Comets were scrapped on January 29, 1976.
