The closest to that I've experienced is a few nights in a hotel room with the bed probably within 15-20 feet of two SBB (Swiss railway) tracks (one per direction) with about 3 or 4 trains per direction going by day and night, but the nearest station was about half a mile away and I never noticed acceleration/deceleration. I think the presence of the station is a major factor. It's one thing to just hear trains rumble by - that's usually not that annoying, even for non-railfans, but it's another to hear every train's brakes as it comes to a stop, and then its propulsion as it starts up again, every single time. |

My son lived in an apartment on Lincoln Road right above the Prospect Park station. He could hear the buzzer, the noise of the shuttle dumping, the announcements on the train. But the biggest issue was that the buses also would idle there. He didn't stay there very long. |

Interesting that the buses were the greater problem in that situation.Where I live, there's an awful lot of horn-honking -- far more than proportional to the amount of traffic and population density. (I've lived in more urban and denser places with less car/horn noise). I'd take the sound of 600-foot trains rolling by no problem if it lessened the car noise. |

I have a vague recollection of a running gag on either the Dennis Day or Jack Benny shows in the early 1950s. An el train would stop right outside the apartment window; the people in the apartment would say hello to the regular riders, and the train would move on. |

Is this the tv show? I don't recall this joke on the radio version.Eitherway, I think I'll take this to the daily roaring of leafblowers they have in the south. Come to think of it, in the good old R1/9 days, it would be great to live alongside a station. The brake and compressor sounds would be very comforting, as well as the scent of burning bearing grease. |
