GG Crosstown - R-46

Posted by italianguyinsi on Fri Jan 3 08:35:36 2025

At least two facebook subway pages are claiming due to a large number of 160s OOS at Jamaica barn, that 46s will be provding the GG service. Not sure how since Jamaica does not hold 46s anymore. One poster said there is a notice on the crew door for the GG at Church Avenue. True?

Sorry, no answer. But an additional question -- how logistically difficult is it to just work the line out of Coney Island temporarily?

It was done before as the line's barn was CI YD, so not unreasonable. I'm more curious on what's going on with the 160s out in Jamaica barn; maybe a SMS?

In the 1980s, the AA was comprised of 7 4-car units that were actually 4 Coney Island 'B' trains cut in half.

Back in the late 80s, the G was served by ( IIRC) 7 trains from Pitkin Yard.

The logistics of using trains out of Coney Island are no more difficult. I'm not saying that this is true but it certainly is not outside the realm of possibilities.

1. It's not fake news. R-160 cars are needed on the Queens Corridor. A good number of 160s are currently out of service.

2. Replacements might be R-68s along with or instead of R-46s.

3. ATO isn't in effect between Court Sq and Church Av.

Isn't the issue CBTC, not ATO? Has ATO been implemented along Queens Bl together with the CBTC?

Yes, both CBTC and ATO are in use along Queens Blvd. However, neither CBTC nor ATO are active on the G Line.

I wouldn't be surprised if they put the R68s that are extra and usually on the N/Q onto the G, and the R46s being transferred are used as backfill.

Like I said, rumors are rumors until they are facts. Since we now know R68s are being used today on the G, it's a fact. People post a lot of BS to the Facebook MTA groups.

I didn't actually see it.

Someone did mention that something was botched with the 63rd St track replacement that has caused an epidemic of flat wheels and this is why there is a shortage of R160s. Again, take that with a grain of salt.

I'm trying to figure out how CI YD is making up for the loss of what? 48 or 54 cars for Bravo/Nancy/Quincy service....

12 minutes isn't sufficent for the D; I brave it every so oftern when my express bus doesn't run and it's always packed. Of course, Holcul rides the Queens IND, so that means the subways are safe, right? :)

It's really amazing to me to see how well patronized the G line has become during recent years.
When I was a kid, to me the GG (as it was called back then) was kind of a sleepy feeder line, but even then it was very important to people living in Greenpoint, Williamsburg and the south.

The Delta is the exclusive provence of Concourse Shop which would mean that Concourse is also responsible for G service as well. Concourse Shop is also the shop with the smallest spare fleet.

Solution: Transfer cars from Coney Island to Concourse Fleet

Common misconception. In 1994, the Concourse fleet was 276 cars assigned to the D line. 30 years later, the concourse fleet is still 276 cars assigned to the D & G lines. You do the math.
