I'm still trying to establish statistically whether I'm in more danger driving through NYC than taking the subway. I've been to many car-crash victims' funerals, but never a subway-stabbing (etc.) one.It's a real question -- I don't know how to establish whether a mile by subway is safer overall vs. a mile driving. |

If there any mathematicians here I'm sure they could figure out the rider to incident ratio on the subway and you'd see that the odds of you getting involved in an "incident" are very low.As an example, many years ago when I worked in the info booth at GCT, some hayseed tourists would ask me if it was safe to go up to Harlem, (by subway) walk around 125 , past the Appolo theater etc. My standard answer would be that many folks have gone up to Harlem and lived to tell about it. You are safer up there than you are in Midtown. Once and awhile they'd come back to thank me for the good encouragement. |

In fairness I'm sure time-of-day and personal qualities play into it. I'm almost certain, for example, that I'm more likely to be severely injured or killed by a drunk driver on a highway at 2a.m. than to be randomly injured or killed on the subway at rush hour. But I'd really enjoy seeing a study with actual data. |
