Tuscarora Almanac for December 24

1911 – from The Book of First Runs

Passenger train service begins on the Lackawanna Railroad’s
“New Jersey Cut-Off”. The 28 mile cutoff extends between Port Morris, New Jersey and Slateford, Pennsylvania. It is eleven miles shorter than the old main line and the grade is significantly reduced. The cutoff includes the Paulinskill and Delaware River Viaducts.

The Paulinskill River Viaduct is 1100 feet long and 115 feet high.
The Delaware River Viaduct is 1452 feet long and 65 feet high.
Both of the viaducts are still intact but no longer used.

1920 – from The Book of first Runs

The IRT Livonia Avenue Line is extended one stop from Junius Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.

1945 – from The Book of Last Runs

The section of the Atlantic Highlands Branch between Highlands and North Long Branch, New Jersey is abandoned. The line ran very close to the sea and was repeatedly damaged by winter storms making it expensive to maintain. The 3.5 mile segment between Highlands and Atlantic Highlands was abandoned on November 30, 1958. Passenger service on the remaining section of the line between Matawan and Atlantic Highlands ended on November 2, 1966. The last public timetable to show this service was T.T. 102 Seashore Trains, effective May 9, 1966 (Corrected July 11, 1966)

And in 1982, Denver got walloped by a massive blizzard. We got almost two feet of snow in 24 hours. This was some 12 years before our first light rail line opened. There was no snow removal plan to speak of in those days. Needless to say, one was implemented shortly thereafter.
