As a kid growing up in Woodside, between December and March it was an exception to get rain during that span of time. Now getting snow during that time is the exception |

WHere I am, south of New York, most of the leaves just started changing color last week. I don't remember fall colors in mid-december.Took a fall leaf train trip like 6 or 8 weeks ago, no colors. Don't know if it's a pattern or a werid year. Every year they talk about bad colors because lack of rain, but mid-december is strange. |

I wonder where that fellow was on the seniority list.Probably high on the list. The 3rd Ave line must have been a high seniority job much like the TSQ - GCT shuttle. That's my guess. Bill M |

On time arrivals. You're not stuck on the train for hours if the railroad goes down the toilet, you finish work on time, no turning for an extra trip near the terminal. |

"How many "Dual Contract" elevated stations had Pot Belly stoves?"Probably none. I can safely say that there wasn't any on the Flushing or Astoria lines, both dual contract lines being used as examples. |

Sometime after the IRT took over the Manhattan els, crews were afraid that el crews would pick subway jobs in the winter forcing the subway crews onto the el. Then in the summer, the reverse would take place. As a result the IRT developed separate seniority rosters for the el and the subway. Unlike the subway, which had one seniority roster, each elevated line had its own seniority roster and if an employee wished to pick either from the el to the subway or the other way, he would have to go to the bottom of the seniority list of the line or division he was going to. Even if an employee wanted to pick from the 2nd Ave el to the 3rd Ave el, he would have to go to the bottom of the 3rd Ave seniority list. Most likely by the time the photo was taken, the M/M was probably one of the last remaining “el men.” I did know a M/M from the subway who picked a midnight run on the 3rd Ave el in the 1960s, but that would be because, as el men retired 3rd Ave runs opened up to crews from the Subway Division who wanted to pick there and they would go behind the remaining el men who still worked there. |

Thats similar to what happened with the Penn Central merger. In the beginning, the NY Central, Pennsy and New Haven had their own rosters.Say a PRR man wanted to bid on an ex NH job, he'd go on to the bottom of the NH roster, while maintaining his seniority with the ex PRR lines. Of course there were equipment, signaling & territory qualifications to be dealt with which just added to the complications. They even had their own bars to hang out after hours. There were two on Lexington Ave, one for ex NH men across from 466 Lex and one for ex NYCRR (across from the Graybar) men. The bar in Penn Sta was (obviously) strictly for PRR & LIRR men Just exampleles of how the Penn Central merger was a merger from hell. |
