Tuscarora Almanac for November 28



1948 – from The Book of First Runs

The IND Fulton Street Line is extended from Broadway - East New York Avenue to Euclid Avenue. Also opened on this date was the Pitkin Avenue Yard.

1962 – from The Book of Wrecks

A crane falls from the BMT Culver El structure at West 6th Street and Sheepshead Bay Road resulting in the deaths of three workers. The crane, No. 20158 was built in 1914 as BRT 3055.



1969 – from The Book of Wrecks

There was a collision on the IND Grand Concourse Line when an empty ten car "CC" rolled backwards from 167 Street and crashed into another "CC" train at the161 Street Station during the PM rush. The consist of the empty train was (n) 501, 456, 393, 660, 513, 428, 354, 275, 621 and 434. The consist of the train at 161 Street was (n) 634, 568, 381, 511, 527, 504, 547, 563, 619 and 444. Cars 434 and 634 were badly damaged.

All IND platforms can berth 10-car trains of 60-footers, so why not?

I recall in the early 1960s, CCs during the shoulder period were 8 cars but in the peak they were 10 cars.

He is probably referring to the length of C trains when he grew up in Woodhaven and rode the C train and it was 8 cars for many, many years.

I'm sure if you look at old photos of CC and C trains most are 8 cars.

Pretty much every C train I've ever ridden has been 8 cars (occasionally 4 cars long ago). Haven't ridden one lately, I admit.

Only full length C trains I've ever seen are the R46 ones.

Yeah. That line never needed more.

I'd say the only busy areas are between 59 and 34 where overcrowding becomes an issue.

I've never seen a 10-car C or CC train myself.
