Tuscarora Almanac for November 20 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Nov 20 08:07:58 2024 Tuscarora Almanac for November 20 1948 – from The Book of First Runs The first ten-car train of R-10's was placed into service on the IND "A" line, which was then operating between 207th Street in Manhattan and Broadway-East New York [now Broadway Junction] in Brooklyn. Source: Mr. William A. Padron 1972- from The Book of First Runs R-44’s begin service on the “D” Concourse-6th Avenue-Brighton Express today. The consist of the train was (N) 276-277-279-278,270-271-269-268. 1987- from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of the diamond "R" Nassau St - 4th Avenue Local between Chambers Street and 95th Street. The consist of the final train was: R-42's; 4878-9, 4850-1, 4897-6, and 4937-6. 2012- from The Book of First Runs Train service on the Rockaway Peninsula section of the IND resumes after having been suspended since the end of October, due to Hurricane Sandy. The line is still cut off from the mainland so R-32’s are trucked in from the Queens mainland and lifted by crane onto the elevated structure. Four cars trains of R-32’s will operate between Far Rockaway and Beach 90th Street via Hammel’s Wye. Service will operate every day from 4 AM to 12:30 AM. It will be designated as “H” Rockaway Shuttle. (Ed. Note. – Kudos to the TA for this move. It reflects the way New York City thinks. We are not going to let a little rainstorm shut down our transit system completely.) 2021-from The Book of First Runs The Long Island Railroad opens a new station at Elmont. It is located on the Mainline (Hempstead Branch) between Queens Village and Bellrose. Initially only eastbound service is operating. Westbound service will begin on October 6, 2022. The R Nassau route , at that time, was pretty much operated as extra M line service.Trains were Not operating out of Chambers St,but were running in service all the way between Metropolitan Ave and 95th st. Such a service would be pretty handy today, given the heavy platform saturation at Jay st,long waits for any R service between Canal st and South Brooklyn. Today's DeKalb Avenue station is hardly the station it was. Service has been reduced there extremely, from 6 lines to 3. It is Only during the late evening and overnight, when the D and N lines are available,at 20 minute intervals,if that. Literally,it has been transformed, from a once bustling crossroad, to the ghost town we have today. Clearly, this is the "MTA Answer" to the so called overflow conditions we Use to see at this station. Reduce the through put, give little variations to service, watch passengers find another way around. Don't get me wrong. The Brighton and 4th avenue service needs are being met ,to the bare minimum. Just the way the MTA wants it. |

The R/Nassau service did operate out of Chamber St except that in the AM the fist 2 N/B Rs went to Met where they became S/B Ms since 2 S/B intervals were needed during that time period. In the PM, 2 arriving Ms at Met became S/B R Nassau trains to balance service. The rest of the R/Nassaus terminated and Laid up at Chambers St. After the PM rush, 4 arriving R layups (not necessarily the Nassau ones) at 95th St ran light to Chambers St where they laid up overnight. In the AM those 4 Rs from Chambers ran S/B in service to 95th St where they became N/B R/Nassau trains. |

Yeah this is how I remember it in its final weeks. Just an extra M train, overserving 4th Ave. To be fair the diamond R was rendered unnecessary once the regular R train was swapped over to Jamaica Yard. |

Every other train leaving Metropolitan as I remember it in both rush hours.Alternate trains to Bay Pky. and 95. In the PM we went lite from 95 to 36th where along the way the c/r changed the signs back to M. |

I'm trying to imagine a n/b R arriving at Chambers(Nassau)then going out of service for a layup north of the station, in the old approach to the Manhattan Bridge. |

It was nothing unusual to discharge N/B trains at Chambers St. Pre Chrystie, N/B West End Lcls and Brighton/Nassau specials discharged passengers there. 2 West End Lcls and all the Brighton specials ran light back to CI Yd and 3 West End Lcls ran light to DO (ENY) Yd where they laid up midday and returned for S/B PM West End Lcl service |

Interesting.I'd just have R trains leaving Met for 95 make announcements that train is going to Broad St. Then once in Manhattan make normal announcements. This would avoid confusion between Metropolitan and Marcy. |

And I remember seeing an R-32 TT train from the Lonesome Larry platform at Broadway Junction in July of 1967. Then a train of BMT standards pulled in. Talk about a gut punch.... |
