Metro North New Locomotives

Posted by Q4 on Mon Nov 25 13:46:02 2024

I don’t recall seeing this posted here, but the first two (Numbers 301 and 302) of thirty-three new Siemens Charger dual mode locomotives for Metro North are at the Harmon Yard and Shop for testing.

Sorry but I am unable to do a direct link but below is a you tube link.

JFYI, your URL was not the direct link. I got this:

That leads to the video below.

So how much longer before the Genesis locomotives are retired? They've only been around for about 25 years. And is this another joint order with Amtrak?

Used to be locomotives weren't ready for retirement until at least age 35. They'd be around for far longer too, even with in-house maintenance. Some of NJT's GP40s have been around for over a half-century.

It reminds me of the Alco C-420s that the LIRR had in service from 1963 to 1976/7. Whats that 13-14 years? They didnt last long there at all.

I wonder if all that stop and go with relatively short distances between stations were detrimental to long ago retired and current MN and LIRR power?

IMO, the diesel engines do better when not stopping often.

I'm looking for the third rail shoes in the video.

In light of that, remember that Amtrak's F40PHs were retired after 2001 (after starting retirements in 1991, with subsequent "cabbage" conversions), but VIA Rail still has their F40PHs going even today as do the commuter railroads that bought them in the 1980s.

Completely off topic, but I noticed that Amtrak California still runs former NJDOT/NJT Arrow I/Comet IB cars on the San Joaquins route, with a former F40PH NPCU on one end.

Jim: It seems to me that the P-32 have given excellent service. They really were the workhorses of the Metro-North diesel lines.

Absolutely! They performed much better than those DE30AC "lemons" over on the LIRR

I also agree! They and their counterparts on Amtrak (32's and 42's) got the job done.

Don't you mean DM30ACs? The DE30ACs are the non-dual-mode ones.
