S/B Flushing shuttle entering 46th/Bliss St station. Notice the 5 car consist which means that the train has one Q and 1 QX unit.

Correct! What I dont get is those Q's shown had their intact high roof. When they were sent to the mainland they were able to fit thru the 60th st tunnel. I'll guess that they would be off to Coney Island to get prepared for their next assignment. My question is if they could fit in BMT tunnels, why did they have to have their rooves shaved when they were on the Myrtle?

Circa 1960, the Dekalb Ave area was realigned and switches relocated. As part of the project, new signals were installed requiring new electrical cable to connect to the new Dekalb master tower. Prior to the new signaling, there was no problem with the original height of the Qs or other BMT el cars.

So what was the Flushing Shuttle? I don't recall that ever being discussed.

IIRC, It was a IRT/BMT shuttle that ran from Main St to QBP, then up to Astoria and back to QBP and Main St. That ran until 1949 when BMT trains from the 60st tunnel went up to Astoria after those platforms to Ditmars got a B division shave to allow 10 ft wide cars to run there.
This resulted in the complete abandonment of the north side of QBP and its eventual dismantling

Jim : It was the other way around. As Queensboro Plaza was never designed as a terminal the BMT operated shuttle in the following manner. The inbound shuttle from Corona would become the outbound shuttle to Astoria. The inbound shuttle from Astoria would become the outbound shuttle to Corona (later Flushing).
This operation lasted until 1939. The tracks at QBP were re-arranged so that the Flushing and Astoria shuttle would now be separate lines. This was done because the Flushing Line would need much more service due to the opening of the World's Fair..

Larry; I believe essentially thats what said about the Shuttles from QBP to/from Astoria and Main St. What I didn't know is that the arrangement was discontinued in 1939. I always thought that it lasted until 1948 when the Astoria line started running thru trains from the 60 st tunnel to Ditmars

First, the shuttles from both Flushing and Astoria were BMT only since BMT steel cars were too wide for the IRT which was the principal operator of both lines. Prior to the 1939 World’s fair the switching arrangement at Qnsbro Plz was such that arriving shuttles from Flushing and Astoria had the go back to the other line’s terminals. After 1939 with the opening of the fair, the switches at the plaza were rearranged so that each shuttle could operate independently of the other an arrangement that lasted until 1949 when the platforms on the Astoria Line were cut back and through trains of BMT steel cars could operate there giving the Astoria Line exclusively to the BMT and the Flushing Line exclusively to the IRT. Of course since both former privates were now city owned the revenue from both lines was now going to the same place.

Well, it's clear evident obvious call it what you will that I have no business entering GTL threads. Over the years, I actually maintained a log, which would be pathetic if it was not so sad, and with this defeat I am currently sitting at 1 for 17 which approximates a success rate of 6%. This rate is not good and anyone with common sense knows that. Quite frankly, the fact of the matter is I will no longer enter GTL threads going forward since it accomplishes nothing other than wasting your time. I'm sorry and I hope this apology will be entered into the official record.

The 4th Avenue Subway in Brooklyn was constructed to accept high level railroad equipment that also allowed elevated railcars to pass.

Q cars were able to pass over the bridge from the Center Street Subway to 4th Avenue subway in Brooklyn as both subway tunnels had similar civil construction dimensions.

BRT ran elevated cars to Chambers Street via the Center Street subway & Williamsburg Bridge well before the BRT steel cars arrived.

The Q's roof would have had to have been lowered to travel over the Broadway BMT subway to the Manhattan Bridge from their original elevated gate car height.
