1955 NYCTS Video

Posted by Q65A on Tue Nov 12 17:42:37 2024

Just saw this B&W video dated 1955 on YouTube; it is silent and has no captions but the footage is pretty cool (including scenes at Bway. Jct. and E 105 St. grade crossing):

Although the video is dated 1955 on Youtube, it appears that some of the scenes were done much earlier. The Lex Ave el which closed in 1950 is still visible in one of the Myrtle scenes although disconnected from the Myrtle. The Grand Ave station which closed not too long after that is still in service in that scene. The absence of any R-16s on the Jamaica Line also seems to indicate that those scenes were shot before 1955 as well. Some of the Fulton St el scenes also seem to have been shot on a weekend when the Fulton El trains terminated at E/Pky although there are also scenes of the Fulton St el trains operating in and out of Rockaway Ave which was the M - F service pattern.

I would date this to very early 50s. Also the opening scene is on the J line of a train between Elderts and Forest Pkwy.

An R16 appears at 18:45. Ergo, 1955 is accurate. But there is much older footage as well.

Thank you very much for sharing this. I wish more cheerful music had been selected for the background, though.

The video really shows how old the current BMT elevated lines are. The scenes are from 70 years ago and the structures were already old then! Obviously a lot of the stations and trackage in the video are long gone but some are still in use.

Also, I believe the Euclid and Shepherd Avenue subway stations on the A line were less than 10 years old in 1955. Euclid opened in 1948, not sure about Shepherd. The videographer probably wanted to show the "modern" subway system as opposed to the ancient Fulton Street el.

All the stations S/O ENY opened at the same time.

Thanks Mitch!
I agree with you about that "soundtrack": that music is really depressing.
I'd much rather listen to wheel flanges squealing around the curves at Queensboro Plaza than that somber piano music.

Me too. No better music than wheels on rails.
