Tuscarora Almanac for October 20

1977 – from The Book of First Runs

IND R-9 Motor Car 1689 arrives at the Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT.

1989 – from The Book of Last Runs

The Edgewater Branch of the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad is embargoed due to falling rock in the Palisades Tunnel.

1992 – from The Book of Service Changes

Tuscarora Dispatch No. 21

The October 1992 Service Changes – Improved Rockaway Service.
New schedules went into effect on October 25, 1992 affecting the A, C, and H trains as well as the Rockaway and Liberty Avenue Lines.
“A” trains would now operate between 207th Street and Far Rockaway at all times. Service to Lefferts Boulevard would run at all times except midnight hours. There would be five “A” trains in the rush hours between Manhattan and Rockaway Park. They would run northbound in the AM rush and southbound in the PM rush. This replaces the former “C” rush hour service to Rockaway Park.

Prior to this change “A” trains had run to Lefferts Boulevard at all times and to Far Rockaway at all times except nights.
“C” train will run between Bedford Park Boulevard (rush hours) or 145th Street (midday and evenings) and Euclid Avenue on weekdays from 6 AM to 9 PM. They will operate between 145th Street and the World Trade Center on weekdays from 9 PM to 11 PM and on weekend at all times except late nights.

Prior to this “C” trains had run to Euclid Avenue and Rockaway Park on weekdays from about 6 AM to 9 PM. At all other times except midnights they ran between 145th Street and the World Trade Center.
“H” Rockaway Park Shuttle and “H” Rockaways (round-robin) Shuttle were discontinued. The “H” Rockaway Park Shuttle had run between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park. The “H” Rockaway Park Shuttle had run between Euclid Avenue and Rockaway Park on weekdays from about 9 PM to 12 midnight. Weekend service ran between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park at all times except midnights.
“H” Rockaways (round-robin) Shuttle had run daily during midnight hours from Euclid Avenue to Rockaway Park to Far Rockaway to Euclid Avenue.

Two new services began operating on October 25, 1992. The ‘S” Rockaway Park Shuttle between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park at all times. The “S” Liberty Avenue Shuttle (or Lefferts Boulevard Shuttle) between Euclid Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard during midnight hours seven days a week.

Assuming that the new schedule went into effect at 12:01 AM on October 25, 1992 the last day of operation for the two “H” shuttles was Saturday, October 24, 1992 while the first day for the two “S” shuttles was Sunday, October 25.
Note on the “S” Rockaway Park Shuttle: Although designated with an “S” this service is still identified as an “H” internally and on official timetables. The designation “H” returned to public use in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when the Rockaway Line was cut off from the rest of the subway system. A special shuttle service was put into effect running between Beach 90th Street and Far Rockaway. This operation lasted from November 20, 2012 to May 30, 2013.

2000 – from The Book of Wrecks

Two out of service No 4 trains were involved in a crash on the center track of the IRT Jerome Avenue Line in The Bronx. The first train had R-62 cars (S) 1370-69-68-67-66/1526-27-28-29-30 (N). It struck the rear of another train which had R-62 cars (S) 1381-2-3-4-5/1365-4-3-2-1 (N). Car 1369 was badly damaged and was stored in the IND Concourse Yard for several years before being scrapped. 1366-67-68 and 70 were stored at the IND 207 Street Yard. 1366 and 1370 were later sent to the Fire Department training Unit on Randalls Island while 1367 and 1368 were reefed.

Thanks to Stef for the follow-up information regarding the disposition of the cars.

I wonder why they didn't consider just having the (C) go to Euclid at all times and the (A) express at that point, given that would happen six and a half years later in May 1999.
