Brooklyn Public Library IRT Station

Posted by R46 5636 on Tue Oct 15 10:40:20 2024

A while back someone posted info regarding a proposed and partially built IRT tunnel & platform below the Brooklyn Public Library. This space is supposedly now used as an auditorium. However I can't seem to find any more information or if this story is even true. Photos of the space seem to suggest it is around the size as described but appears to be nothing more than just an auditorium.

Would love to learn more if anyone has information to add or has been down there years ago themselves.

You've had 18 years to read the thread. More than enough time.

It is more of a storage location now.

Years ago, the Transit Authority planned to use the space for a Franklin Shuttle, Brooklyn Queens crosstown connector route.

The plan was cancelled.
The intent of the route as planned was an branch off the Flatbush Ave route to continue to the proposed Crosstown line.

There was also a branch planned for Lafayette Avenue from DeKalb Ave, but it was redirected to Flatbush Ave and the Brighton line.

The Lower Level of Nevins st was a "junction" station that branches off to several additional branches.

The link would have been an excellent addition to the system, but the BOT, and TA decided not to build.

The IRT links would have been today's 3rd Avenue ,or the 1st avenue subway.
The Bowery station has a small box station built for this line above the J line tunnels, that could be accessed for the mezzanine.

Brooklyn has plenty of these bellmouths and branch sections, but no plans for use at the time.

My mother died around the time that thread was posted, so I guess I was otherwise occupied.

Oh, and fuck off, wiseass.

A crosstown line was also planned to run from Queensboro Plaza down Jackson Ave. Was that the same line? I've posted photos of the trackways built into the QBP structure that were ultimately used for the turnaround track for the BMT. They are hiding in plain sight.

Nope.
That would have never been built, since Brooklyn didn't want a crosstown elevated.
It asked for a subway repeatedly.

A Bedford Ave subway was proposed, with some small sections being built into the IND structures.

The current reopened Bedford Ave entrance on the Fulton Street subway is actually the Bedford Avenue subway mezzanine.

Today,a use for the unused Tunnel, station, and route is easy to figure out.

The Same plan.
Same use.
Connect the Franklin Brighton line to the Crosstown.
