Question About Old South Ferry and City Hall stations

Posted by Mitch45 on Thu Sep 19 12:57:57 2024

How closely does the old SF station resemble City Hall? Were they the same lengths and have the same degree of track curvature?

City Hall is much more ornate. You won't find any Guastavino tilework at South Ferry.

South Ferry has two tracks as well, the shuttle from Bowling Green where only the center doors on the cars could open since it was a tighter radius.
When I worked in LIC and it was snowing sure wish the shuttle still ran to get to the Ferry.

City Hall's curve is nowhere near as sharp as even South Ferry's outer loop. Easy enough to Google pictures of each. South Ferry needs gap filler panels but City Hall does not.

Yes, I know that. I was asking about the physical measurements of the two stations - the length of the platform and the angle of the curve. We all know that City Hall is ornate.

OK - but when the SF station originally opened, I don’t think the inner platform existed. Regardless, I am just talking about the length of the platforms and the degree of the curve.

If the original City Hall station were still in use, you had better believe it would need gap fillers like South Ferry.

Inner platform is longer than the outer.

I don't know the curvature; but the South Ferry outer loop accommodated six of the original cars (which had doors at the ends only, and didn't open the first or last doors on a train, and five cars with center doors.

The inner loop accommodated ten cars, center doors only.

I assume the City hall outer loop was a similar length.

The outer loop had a curvature of approximately 77 degrees with a track radius of 190 feet. The mathbis pretty easy from there.

I seem to recall counting the openings on the inside platform and there were 10 of them.

There is only one loop at City Hall no “inner” or "outer."

Was South Ferry built originally with those two loop racks?

Yes it was Mike. There was no platform on the inner loop as built. That was added later.

Hast thou not taken the vaccine?

On average, the vaccine helps greatly. But plenty of vaccinated people get serious cases of covid too.

One loop with an inner and outer track. Not an inner and outer loop.

Of course. But you were responding to a post about City Hall.

As for South Ferry, I think it makes sense to talk about two separate loops, because there is one loop that originates on the west side and one loop that originates on the east side. The west side only has access to the outer loop, whereas the east side has access to both.

Definitely. In January and February 2021, and realized I'd been holding my breath for nearly a year. :-)

Then several boosters, and had planned to get the latest this month.

But different viruses, and vaccines, behave differently.

And if I hadn't had the vaccine in early 2021, with my age and medical condition, I'm sure COVID would have killed me by now.
