How Many Cemeteries Do Subway Trains Either Pass By, Under or Over?

Posted by heypaul on Sun Sep 29 23:12:47 2024

I think the last stop on one line is real close to the last resting place for many people.

That would be Lutheran Cemetery at the end of the M Line where my father is buried. When i was at my father’s funeral I never dreamed that someday i would be a M/M on trains on that el.

In Washington DC there is the most well know National Cemetery in the United States, Arlington Cemetery. It even has its own station of the same name.

The Blue, Orange and Silver lines pass by Congressional Cemetery under Potomac Avenue between Potomac Avenue and the Stadium-Armory stations.

The Green line passes under Rock Creek Cemetery Between Georgia Avenue Petworth and Fort Totten. There were delays in the boring of the tunnels from people that protested not wanting the tunnels to passing under the Cemetery. Never mind the fact the bottoms of the graves were closer to the surface of the ground they were interned in then the top of the tunnels by 40 or more feet.

The F Culver goes over Washington Cemetery. The Bay Parkway stop is one of the least used in the system as it is surrounded by it. You can get off there but you can never get back on.

The 9th Ave stop of the D is right next to Green-Wood cemetery, as is the 38th St yard.

The L runs along the cemeteries at Wilson Ave, and the J/Z runs along the other side from Crescent St.

The 4 train of course goes to Woodlawn.

Any ever have to be relocated, or do they just put highways on top of the caskets?

At Lutheran cemetery in Middle Village, I vaguely remember hearing that they had to move a few graves when building the New York Connecting Railroad back in around 1918.

Given how you can feel a nice locomotive thumping from quite a distance, I wonder if they only "clear" the ROW or any further and what the ground effects are beyond.

The M also goes by/under Rockefeller Center. That's where Sinead O'Connor buried her career.

The 4/5 and R/W pass on either side of the Trinity Churchyard, and again St. Paul’s Church, with the R/W also wrapping around its north side.

The 1 then passes through the Trinity Cemetery (owned by the same Trinity Church), which is divided by Broadway between 153rd and 155th.

The QB line runs along Maple Grove Cemetery between Kew Gardens and Briarwood.

Others have mentioned Green-Wood Cemetery with regard to the D train, but that cemetery also has a “salient” that reaches 4th Avenue between 36th and 34th Streets, thus abutting the N/R as well.

Back in the day of the 3rd and 2nd Avenue El, the SF branch passed by the Shearith Israel graveyard.

Bayside Cemetery
It’s funny you said that because it was the first one I thought of.
The F goes by one near Bay Parkway.

This is interesting:
‘Bayside was founded in 1865, making it one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in New York City that is still active. Among those buried there are military veterans from the Civil War and a victim of the sinking of the Titanic – George Rosenshine.’

A unique trolley car was the DUR's funeral car, introduced in 1901. Detroit was one of a few cities to have such a car, and it was booked solid. It hauled anybody who had been anybody to the cemetery. The funeral car was black, with no name or number, and had an opening near the front to receive the casket. It stayed in service from 1901 to 1917. Each of the large cemeteries of the time maintained a loop of track to accommodate the car. The mourners rode right along with the corpse, coffin and family in front, guests in the rear.

I haven't seen it from the El in years.

I wonder if vandals are still a problem.
