When I was railfanning at 10 years old (can you imagine letting a 10yo go on the subway by themself these days?) I took an N train to 62/New Utrecht and changed to the West End and was shocked to see an old train pull into the station. I can't remember if it was a standard or a triplex. I thought they were all gone by then, and it would have been 1965.

The next time I rode a standard it was 1969 when I went to Stuy and rode the LL before the R9s started to appear. The R9s didn't seem like an improvement at all, replacing one old car with another. Only when the R42s appeared there did it feel different.

I started sneaking on the F train at 18 Avenue with friends at 11 years old, but was officially allowed to ride the subway by my parents at 13 years old.

We rode on the BMT on the two previous days, but I never saw a Triplex train. That said, the only West End train we rode on was an R-32 TT during midday hours. Chances are any Triplexes that were left only came out during rush hours.

We left for home on the morning of the 23rd. The subway had left an indelible impression on me.

TheGreen Hornet date is off by 10 years. The year should be 1933.
