BART gets new fare gates

Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Mon Jul 22 17:17:05 2024

These train stations get tougher walls than the Dem's put on the border.
The world we live in is one where people are so entitled to take from the man, they won't pay a subway fare. Imagine what else they have no boundaries in taking or doing in society.

When the top 10% own 90% of all wealth...
I pay my BART fare, but in case you are unaware BART, like WMATA, charges distance fares, refuses to sell monthly passes, refuses to run 24/7 and deliberately builds massive stations which cos more to build and maintain.

IMNSHO, I think all urban mass transit systems should run like NYCT 24/7/365.

I remember a conversation I had with the curator of the Paris Urban Transport Museum nearly 60 years ago. He was amazed at NYC's 24/7 operation and wondered how maintenance was done.

The correct answer might have been that maintenance wasn't done and that's why we're in trouble now.

Separate issues. Any route in NY, Chicago, Phl, SF Bay Area can safely run Owl service--not alaways 10' headways, but sufficient to get late shift workers, music venue patrons etc home albeit more slowly than by private car. For example, if BART wants to do work in the transbay tube, single tracking allows for safe work (primary!)and service under the Bay. Using maintenance as an excuse not to operate ANY overnight service is a socio/political decision, not a genuine safety issue.

Paris and similar cities run a proper night-bus operation, where many of the key subway lines are replicated in whole or in part by buses -- a mix of regular bus routes that just run 24/7 with some adaptations and night-only routes that are there because there's not trains. It's not like you can't get anywhere; it's just that once it gets so late into the night that you don't need a 900-person train every 10 minutes anymore (which is also likely the time when buses won't get stuck in traffic), you might as well shut down and run maintenance if sufficient buses are ready to go.

This is where I would say NYC is in its own category. At least on weekends/holidays and probably more than that, the case for a systemwide shutdown is hard to make. There are sufficient crowds at the shoulders of the overnight period that by the time you execute the shutdown it's time to reopen.

That being said, NYC should at least experiment with a night-bus layout or multiple variations, maybe shutting down major portions of the system at a time for proper maintenance, but leaving in place at least some way for most people to get home.

I am sure the bookstores in NYC where I worked until 1 or 2 AM is no longer open that late. That said, yes if the buses replicate the trains with decent headways and running times, that will do. In the BART case, it became particularly ugly when AC Transit cut back transbay bus service. The net result was having to leave concerts before the musicians stopped playing or looking at avery expensive cab ride. Before anyone touts uberlyft, I am not comfortable with outfits that destroyed taxi driving as a livable job.

These are the kind of gates the MTA should be using. These are similar to the kind of gates used by PATCO in Philly/South Jersey.

Why?

You do know that the subway was originally intended to haul freight at night, right?

True, bus as it the case with class 1 RRs, passenger trains take precedence over freights or at least they used to when the same RRs operated both freight and passenger service.
