Those July 1983 IRT service changes have held up well for the most part.

Where are R-142A cars 7220-7216 and 7211-7215 today?

Franklin Square PATCO Station

Posted by Wallyhorse on Wed Jul 10 15:14:50 2024, in response to Tuscarora Almanac for July 10, posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Jul 10 07:42:26 2024.

The Franklin Square Station on the PATCO line would reopen in 1976 but close again in '79 as the area was not nearly as residential at that time east and north of Chinatown.

The station is currently in the final phases of a $30 Million rebuild and is slated to reopen later this year as the area surrounding the station is much more residential than in years past. It will allow those in Northern Liberties in particular to be able to ride over to Center City (Locust at 9th-10th, 12th-13th or 15th-16th) as well as to Camden (and other points in South Jersey) they have not had with the area as it is now until this.

Actually, When the south terminals of the 2, 3, 4, and 5 were swapped, Midday 5s terminated at Bowling Green leaving only the 4s to go to Atlantic.

I remember when the 5 traveled to South Ferry.
Evenings and weekends.
Midday,to Atlantic Ave.

I always wondered why Lexington Ave trains ended at Atlantic, instead of Utica or New Lots..
It was pretty weird, seeing early number 5 trains Express on Sunday mornings.. to and from Utica.

I remember there being signs at Franklin Ave with the exact times Lexington Ave trains would run there down to the half minute. I can also remember even earlier taking a Low-V from there to Utica and then taking a newer train to Pennsylvania Ave to visit my grandmother, and going to Fortunoff's.

When my orthodontist was of course in the Williamsburg bank building (weren't they all?) I would take the train from my JHS to there and see the Lex trains terminating at Atlantic. It was on those trips that I saw the R12/14/15s mixed in and how strange they looked to me.

They used the express tracks for mid-day lay ups.

But you do have a right to wonder since for some unknown reason, while there was no midday M - F express service in Bkln on the IRT, there was midday exp service in Bkln on weekends.

The Lexington Ave. expresses had higher ridership on the Bronx end of the line. Overnight storage was in the Bronx. Mid-day weekday storage on the Eastern Parkway express tracks was so that they did not to send all of those trains back to the Bronx at the end of the morning rush.

I recently watched a NYC true crime video.

RD, a vandal, was talking about doing graffiti on those 4 train layups between Atlantic and Utica in the 1980's.
