Tuscarora Almanac for April 28 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sun Apr 28 10:55:24 2024 Tuscarora Almanac for April 28 1950 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of operation for the Interborough Rapid Transit Company’s Composite Cars. These were the first electric multiple unit rapid transit cars designed for the “First Subway.” There construction was a “composite” of wood and steel with a great deal of fire-proofing. They ran in the subway until 1916 when they were transferred to the 2nd and 3rd Avenues Elevated Lines. The end came quickly. Their replacements were the BMT Q-Types from Queens and the first of these cars arrived on April 3 and within 28 days they had replaced the remaining Composites. 1951 – from The Book of Last Runs Saturday, April 28, 1951 will be the last full day of streetcar service in Cincinnati, Ohio. NB: Streetcar service returned to Cincinnati on September 9, 2016 with the opening of the Cincinnati Bell Connector. 1967 – from The Book of Last Runs This will be the last weekday of service on the Central Railroad of New Jersey before implementation of the “Aldene Plan.” The Aldene Plan would re-route CNJ passenger trains from their Jersey City Terminal on the Hudson River into Pennsylvania Station in Newark, New Jersey over the tracks of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Today will be the last day of through service between Jersey City and Philadelphia . The last train on this route will be No 621 “THE WALL STREET”. It will leave Jersey City at 5:42PM and arrive at the Reading Terminal in Philadelphia at 7:28PM. Today is also the last day of service to Kearny, New Jersey. The last train No 9501 will leave Kearny at 4:59PM and arrive in Plainfield-North Plainfield Station at 5:48PM. This will also be the last day of operation of the CNJ ferryboat “ELIZABETH”. The ferry will operate for one more day but the service will be covered by the two ferryboats leased from New York City, THE TIDES and THE NARROWS. 1973 – from The Book of Last Runs This was the last full day of service on the IRT 3 Avenue El in The Bronx. It fell to the R-12's, then the oldest cars in regular service on the IRT to close out the service. The last revenue train left Gun Hill Road on Saturday night at 11:42 PM for the run to 149 Street. It left 149 Street northbound at 12:06 AM on Sunday morning, April 29 and arrived at Gun Hill Road at 12:23 AM. The consist was (s) 5778-5760-5793-5802 (n). It was followed by an empty back-up train consisting of (s) 5782-5791-5768-5754 (n). Source: New York Division Bulletin /April 1973, article by Mr. Bernard Linder; Brooklyn Subway Bob added the following: My M/M was Martin Begley, a real gentleman. Bklyn subway bob was the conductor. One other thing, Johnny Hornack was the RCI that readied the train at E180 Street Yard and rode the train for the entire trip. I told him I didn't know much about the Low Vs and he told me I'll take care of the train all you have to do is look good Ed. Note: This was indeed a dark day. Tuscarora Despatch No. 29 3rd Avenue El Car Assignments 1955-1973 The 3rd Avenue El south of 149th Street was closed on May 12, 1955. Thereafter all train service ran between Gun Hill Road and 149th Street. Service was provided by IRT MUDC cars and BMT Q-Types. Standard Steinway motors car replaced the MUDC’s and Q-Types in December 1956. They ran in six cars trains. Eleven trains were needed to cover the rush hour service. The number of Steinway started to decline as the oldest cars were retired. Beginning in early 1961 a Lo-V trailer replaced a motor car. In 1962 train length was reduced to five cars. The peak requirement remained at eleven trains The fifty World’s Fair-Steinway motors were transferred to the el in February 1962. Two of these cars, 5660 and 5689 became work motor for the R-37 Vacuum Cleaner Trains leaving forty eight cars. There were now about ten standard Steinways (5628, 5631, 5633,5636,5638,5641,5647,5649, 5650,5651) on hand as well as seventeen Lo-V trailers (4902,4913,4934,4942,4946,4950, 5303,5312,5323,5330, 5335,5337,5340, 5353, 5354, 5356,5390). This gave a total of seventy fours cars. This number continued to decline as the oldest cars were withdrawn. Due to this fact in about April 1968 the five museum Lo-V Motors were placed in service. At first they ran as a solid train but later were intermixed with the other cars. The first train of R-12’s began operating on the El on November 3, 1969. The last of the old cars ran on August 30, 1969. There were fifty of these cars all with General Electric braking systems, nos. 5703-5802. They ran in four car trains and the rush hour requirement was for eight trains. Four R-14’s 5803-5806 were placed in service on April 29, 1971. . The last full day of service on the El was Saturday, April 28, 1973. The final run left 149th Street at 12:06 AM on Sunday, April 29, 1973 and arrived at Gun Hill Road at 12:23 AM. First and Last Runs At 12:01 AM the first train of Steinway motor cars was placed in service on the 3rd Avenue El in The Bronx. The consist was composed of 4757, 5642, 4700, 4716, 5638 and 4768. December 15, 1956 was a Saturday so it would seem that the entire fleet of about eleven trains was replaced in one day. This would not have been difficult as on a Saturday only about four train-sets were needed to cover the service. The last train of IRT “elevated” cars consisted of MUDC motor cars; 1795, 1793,1754,1778,1761 and 1780. Their retirement marked the end of wooden cars on the IRT. November 3, 1969 was the last day of operation of pre-WWII cars on the IRT #8 3rd Avenue El in The Bronx. The last train made one trip in the AM rush. Here is the consist. (N) Steinway Motor Car 5641 (ACF-1925) World’s Fair-Steinway Motor Car 5670 (St Louis-1938) Low-Voltage Trailer Car 5353 (Pullman-1922) Steinway Motor Car 5636 (ACF-1925) World’s Fair-Steinway Motor Car 5676 (St Louis-1938) April 28-29, 1973:. The consist of the last revenue train was (s) 5778-5760-5793-5802 (n). It was followed by an empty back-up train consisting of (s) 5782-5791-5768-5754 (n). The Electric Railroaders Association ran a “Farewell to the El” fan-trip on Sunday, April 29. The consist was Lo-V Motors 5290, 5292, 5443, 5466, 5483 and Lo-VT 4902. The train left from Grand Central at 10 AM. Car 5483 developed mechanical trouble and had to be set out at Westchester Yard. The other five cars made the last two round trips on the el. Even though there are many photos of the 3rd Avenue El, in various stations along the line, I see almost no photos of a train in the Southern terminal. |

I read that those Composites had to be drenched with gasoline in order for their carbodies to be set on fire. That's how much asbestos they had. |

That's one of the sad parts about the death of the streetcar. Without mass transit, the downtowns for cities and towns just withered. There was one town that shut down their streetcar system in August of some year. The before and current photos of the downtown area showed that it went from bustling to sparsely populated. |

Oh yes, I agree. One thing, the only thing that the City of San Francisco has going for it is it's TROLLEY LINES. I wish NYC could have single track route encircling Central Park with several by-pass areas. A non-revenue connection to the BMT 7th Ave tracks going to the former Delancy Street trolley terminal as a Muesum. |

From what I understand, even though most of the subway infrastructure is intact, the demographics of the city have changed since its construction so that it would not be of much use to the population of Cincinnati as it exists today. |

Perhaps this is one of the reasons the city won't use the structure. New York City is another place with unused tunnels with potential. Line extensions, and long tunnel structures are all over the city. |

Beyond that, I have seen pix indicatingdata cabling, but that is high up the walls, thus not insurmontable.Whether Cincy, needs? wants? useful transit is a much larger question. As to NY, Avid, below, has it right. |

Yeah.I know the line looks like a high platform interurban rail line.. and most of the right of way was destroyed for the interstate highway. Even saw pictures of the outside rail stations built for it, until the expressway destroyed them. That was a ridiculous thing to do... NYC has built infrastructure similar to this, and left it to languish also. Built tunnels, then filled them in with sand and dirt. The Lexington Ave subway below 42nd St was dugout, then filled in.. Should have finished that.would have been very useful today. Madison Ave subway was dug out in some places, but covered back up.. It's happed in Queens, Brooklyn, even Staten Island. |

True.. but even if funds were to be found "for the Right People", who's to say anything will happen?Look what happened to major projects that made perfect sense to build, but ended up getting nowhere.. A prime example is SAS. It was paid for several times, but nothing was built until the 70s, outside of Christie St. Even That effort was killed by the crooked mayor, who should not have had a voice, but you know what really happened to the funding in the first place. The cost of building infrastructure in NY is high because of dirty underhanded dealings, and over design/over engineering... over payment for property etc. What should have been a Millions dollar project, has become Billions dollar project due to schemes, greed and deception. NY lost the last great subway expansion program because the federal government saw through the nonsense, and so did the voters who rejected both bonds after the 1967 bond passed, but received little in return for their investment. |

BART is being extended to SanJose because SJ thinks it is a major hub. The next segment from the East Side where it already connects to light rail, to "downtown" is currently $12.5 B. |

Caltrain as it goes electric will be much nicer, and faster. As to the East Bay, you already have BART connecting to VTA LR, into San Jose. far more important is extending either Capitol Corridor or Caltrain to Salinas rather than widening 101. |

Greater san Jose features many low rise offices w/parking lots, but a large lack of ghousing. In the couple of major economic crises--dot com bust around turn of century, and more recent, traffic from east of the hills was reduced. |
