54 years ago today

Riders on the 7, and the city in general, went bananas at 3:14 PM when Cleon JOnes caught Davey Johnson's fly ball in left field to wrap up the World Series for the Miracle Mets. I remember that as though it were yesterday. I got home from school in time to see the ninth inning and stayed to watch the clubhouse celebration - and in the process I was late for a drum lesson.

And that same Davey Johnson went on to manage the Mets to their 1986 World Series win over the Boston Red Sox!

I was at Shea for that! I had an upper level 3rd base side seat.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't fans stream out on to the field and take the bases as souvenirs, while others tore up the grass turf as well.

They sure did.

I was saddened that they tore down Shea. I saw The Beatles there, saw the Jets and Namath, the '69 Mets win both the playoff and the World Series, and more other Mets games than I could count. I saw Koufax, Drysdale, Mays, Aaron, Seaver, Koosman, Ryan, and probably every other National League star.

The last time I was there I just remember it feeling old and dumpy though.

Cleon kept saying, "Come on down, baby, come on down."

And there was a Jets game there the following Monday night. They tried to patch up the field as best they could, but divots were torn up all over again.
