[Photos & Videos] Lots of LIRR Service Footage Prior to Grand Central Full Service

Posted by Q23 on Mon Mar 13 01:28:07 2023

Here's a bunch of footage of LIRR trains prior through the February 27th service changes. Whether you liked it or hated it, there were massive changes with all types of impacts. There was the discontinuation of various service patterns (some without public notice) and changes to other. I tried to catch as many of the last such trains and any obscure service patterns which were set to be eliminated under the new timetable. Here they are below:

End of Brooklyn Direct Service on Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, Babylon (east of Freeport) Branches

These were the last trains of their type on each Branch. Worth noting that the Port Jefferson Branch train was also the only super-express/flyer train from Brooklyn, which skipped Jamaica and made its first stop on Long Island. Babylon Branch service to/from Atlantic Terminal still exists, however only west of Freeport. Even more bizarre is that under the new schedule, the first Babylon Branch train in the afternoon starts later than the last Babylon Branch train under the old schedule.

Was also planning to catch the last Long Beach Branch train but was not able to because I learned of another change that would happen around a similar time that the last train would leave Atlantic Terminal (9:00 PM)....

End of UBS Arena Service to Belmont Park
Without publicly disclosing it, the MTA planned on discontinuing service to Belmont Park for UBS Arena events on February 24th as well. I literally found out service was being discontinued by chance, the day of! In its place, many evening Main Line trains now stop at Elmont, regardless of whether and event is held or not. The footage below is from the final UBS Arena event for which service was provided. At least for now, the station is not completely abandoned, as nothing concrete has been said regarding racetrack events. However nobody knows exactly what the case is with this.

Last Day of West Hempstead Branch Shuttle Trains to/from Valley Stream
With all West Hempstead Branch service being extended to/from Jamaica and other western terminals (mainly Atlantic Terminal), shuttle service and service to Valley Stream ended on Sunday February 26th.

End of Far Rockaway Branch SE Queens Express Service

On weekdays, Far Rockaway Branch trains made local stops on the Atlantic Branch stations in SE Queens (Locust Manor, Laurelton, Rosedale), while Long Beach Branch trains ran express between Valley Stream and Jamaica. On weekends, it was flipped, with Far Rockaway Branch trains being the express and Long Beach Branch trains making local stops. While there are Long Beach Branch trains still running express on weekdays, Far Rockaway Branch trains now operate local at all times.

Last Far Rockaway Branch Train from Atlantic Terminal

The last Far Rockaway Branch train from Brooklyn departed at 11:31 PM on February 26th. It was a standard M7 set, which got to Far Rockaway past midnight. Shuttle service to/from Jamaica only would begin 30 minutes later.

Montauk Branch Oddball Stopping at Woodside
Montauk Branch Train 2742 was the 6:27 PM train from Penn to Speonk. It was the only regularly scheduled Montauk Branch train to stop there, the only remaining diesel train to stop at a local Main Line station, and the only one to stop at a local station within NYC limits. This is now Train 44 IIRC, which now skips Woodside and departs Penn a minute later than before. I also did not know C3s had automated announcements either.
