Trolley track bye pass Photo

Posted by Avid Reader on Fri Nov 18 15:32:42 2022

How 2-way traffic was achieved on single track routes

I remember it well.

Timing was the key, if one was late, you had to wait.

He stole it from Pinterest.

It’s on Pittston Avenue in Scranton.

Heh. Scranton. Dunder Mifflin. Funny words are funny.

I rode through sidings on Warburton Avenue (Yonkers RR 1) and Nepperhan Ave. (route 5). I don't recall passing sidings in Manhattan or The Bronx.

The points seem to be spring switches which automatically lined the route.

Common. CSS&SB between Gary and MichiganCity set up longer passing sidings w/spring switches for passing sidings. In each direction the normal position was for righthand running entering, spring leaving. Worked well since 1926; getting full two track main as we write.

Glad you axed. There is an interesting story behind these locations, one that almost ended my then short life.

We, my family, my father, my mother and my older brother were visiting our relatives in Scranton, Pa.

On this occasion we were visiting with my mom's High School friend located on Pittston Ave., which had a trolley line on it.

A bunch of us kids were in front of the house sitting on the curb tossing rocks and pebbles into the street.

I took a notion to put a pebble on the trolley tracks.

My brother said I would be in trouble, as a trolley was coming and the pebble would cause the trolley to tip over.

Not wanting to get in trouble, I ran out and retrieved the pebble and on the return sprint I was just barely nudged by a car as it screeched to a halt. I was knocked unconscious, but otherwise pronounced okay.

So I have first hand knowledge about trolley tracks on Pittston Ave. in Scranton Pa.

Thanks for asking.

Before the work on the TIMES SQUARE shuttle, I had advocated for

this type of switches to be used on the center tracks to allow two car

sets to operate during rush hours.

The Staten Island trolley car network had numerous 1-track sections, like along parts of Richmond Road, with short passing sidings. That was one of the reasons the service was so unreliable and was shut down and replaced with buses in 1937.

There was an exodus of people from Scranton and a lot of my

relatives were among them, not all, some stayed but have since

passed-away. My most recent visit was about twenty years ago.

However while searching for phots I came across a number of beautiful

homes, mansions really, but Scranton lacks a firm economic base so they

are bargains!

South Bend had those as well. Most streetcar lines there were single track. Michigan Street was double tracked through downtown because virtually all routes used its trackage either to loop back or as part of the line they served.

South Bend lost its streetcars in 1940. They would have really come in handy during the war. The buses that replaced them were woefully inadequate for the crush of wartime traffic.

There is a passing siding right beneath the Indiana Toll Road where it passes over the South Shore tracks east of LaPorte.

When visiting we would go to " Central City", the term for downtown Scranton. We would say " we would say I'm going Over Town.

The choice to travel was getting the Trolley at Birch St. and Crown Ave.

The fare was $.05. The cost of the Laural Line was $10.

The pros and cons were the trolley was more frequent and less costly.

The Laural line was faster.

The trolley brought us into the main shopping district, while the Laural Line was about two blocks from the shopping.

I believe there is a spring switch just east of Sayville NY on the L.I.R.R. where it goes from two tracks to a single track towards Patchogue.
