Some give-aways: the handhold in the upper left, the shape of the roof, the seating. Compare with this photo from 1964: |

What confused me was the handhold, which I thought was unique to the Triplex, but here are two Standards, one with "straps" and one with those handholds like in the OP's photo: Now the big give-away is the window behind the musician. |

I noticed those light covers too, but I don't know enough about the history to explain these differences. Here are several more Standards with straps and no light covers (none were identified by car number or year): This may be a prototype, Car #2001, dated 1915, with no handholds at all, no fans, and solid storm-door window: |

Interesting photos; they show how the BRT management was trying to arrive at a suitable lighting design for their new cars. It is interesting to note that the Standards ran from 1915 to 1969 (albeit in increasingly diminished numbers). This makes the 57-year run of the R32s from 1964 to 2021 even more impressive. |

The first BMT steels did have covers (lampshades?) over the bulbs bu subsequent orders did not have them and they were removed from the cars that did have them. Not sure why but it was probably a maintenance issue. |

Were those vertical, rattan partitions ever deployed to provide additional seating?AKA "drop seats". I believe they were used in the beginning, but larger crowds of passengers probably necessitated not using them and opening the doors behind them that were closed. Bill Newkirk |

Thanks for the information about the original accessories that proved less than necessary.I'm guessing the drop seats could have been okay for a "Rock Park" or "Far Rock" midtown direct service utilizing Rockaway Branch of the abandoned LIRR but........ Those lamp shades most likely dimmed the light some what anyway. |
