And at one time, they took full advantage of that flexibility. That all ended in 1954, when all 8th Ave. trains continued south to Chambers St. and all 6th Ave. trains went down Houston St.

Ah, that's what confused me. When you said south, I thought meant east of the station, and didn't notice you said geographic west.

As the video in the link provided shows, B3 track begins an upgrade at a point where the Emergency Alarm (EA) Blue Light is located immediate south B-way Lafayette. Too late for a cross-over from tracks B1 to B3.

The IND tunnel is pretty deep under Houston Street since it must pass under two mezzanines at B-way Lafayette where the lower IND mezzanine is under the IRT Lex, and BMT Broadway subway tunnels.

A cross-over north of B-way Lafayette from Track B1 to B3 would require additional support to horizontal steel beams as vertical columns would need to be removed to make open space for a single cross-over. Any such crossover would have to take place north of the express track B3 to B4 cross-over located north of the station.

Unfortunately the tunnel ceiling north of the B3-B4 cross-over is not sufficiently high enough for civil construction work to under pin horizontal beams that presently hold up horizontal steel work found in curtain walls.

South of the B3-B4 cross-over the tunnel ceiling rises because of the deep cut, however also at this point B1 track moves away to the right of B3 to create a rather long tapered open void space as tracks approaches the Express station platform.

Unfortunately there is too much civil construction work that must take place to install any cross-over switch from B1 to B3. Anything can be accomplished with public money, if available.
