Most notable thing I see right away is that there are no trains that skip Jamaica.

It does stand to reason as to allow those on Penn bound trains to transfer to GC trains (and vice versa).

Interesting that the timetables say Grand Central leaving off the Madison.

The station is under Park Av. They should have called it 'Grand Central Park'.

Another observation -- like Grand Central, "Grand Central Madison" will also shut down overnight, with no departures between 1:45am and 5:45am.

The station is under Park Av.

I guess so. But the concourse is under the area between Madison and Vanderbilt.

I have been studying them the last couple of hours.

I think they will have to give in about more peak trains from Long Island to Brooklyn, like a few Far Rockaway.

Strange that Far Rockaway is mostly a GCT branch on weekdays, but a NYPS branch on weekends.

Oyster Bay on weekends remains in the dust, and an unusbale service, 2 hour intervals and a 3 hour one. They could run a 90 minute interval wiht the same 2 train sets with a little thought.

All the off-peak Huntingtons are all stop locals. Port Jeff shuttles go back to 90 minutes, but still a very slow trip. At least the South Shore diesels connect with faster MU's or run direct.

Stopping all the weekend Ronkonkoma's at Elmont is overkill.

4+ hour gap reverse peak remains out of Port Jeff itself, or you have to Suffolk Transit yourself to Stony Brook for an intermediate train.

Same train never stops at both Kew Gardens and Forest Hills. Nothing wrong about that.

Interesting. They could easily keep the LIRR concourse open while keeping the main GCT area closed.

The Elmont thing is surreal. What on earth does that station need 15-minute service all day long on weekends?

The LIRR has always run overnight service from Penn. The draft schedules show 4 trains per hour eastbound from Penn towards Jamaica between 2am and 5am. This seems slightly more frequent than my recollection of the schedules when I used to ride the rails late night. (I remember just missing the 2:43am to Babylon and having to wait for the 5:10am train a few times -- which really wasn't all that much fun in 1980's Penn Station...).

Yes, though different clock patterns on weekends for some reason.

2:43 must have been a weekends. Weekdays would have been 1:10 and 3:10am. Same clock pattern as daytime, though skipped 2 and 4 oclock hours.

I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing. Once service becomes infrequent, I think it is better to have it consolidated at one terminal or the other.

It may also be because the One Vanderbilt building doesn't want to keep the building entrances open all night.

150 spaces reserved for commuters. The rest of the 2800 spaces in the lot are paid spaces.

It doesn't make any sense. The station will get one train per hour in each direction during off-peak times on weekdays, and four trains per hour in each direction on weekends.

Big mistake not having round the clock MN service. IIRC Penn Central shut GCT down back in the early 70s when they went broke. But that was then. This is now. The explosive population & housing growth in the Harlem And Hudson Valleys in NY & the growth in Fairfield and New Haven counties in CT in the past 50 yrs more than justifies the service.

This seems slightly more frequent than my recollection of the schedules when I used to ride the rails late night.

Once or twice I've taken a very very early morning train from Penn and then on to JFK. I also don't remember quite 4 tph to Jamaica - more like 3.

What does MNRR have to do with it?

The entrances from Madison Ave to the LIRR concourse have nothing to do with the current GCT.

I speak of those who get off the Lex Ave subway after hours. That would be where most of the riders would come from. So they would now have to walk in the street up to Mad & 45th or 48th st in the middle of the night to get to the LIRR station with the concourse closed?

LIC is more of a yard with some short platforms on it than a true station. HPA is the real origin/destination on that section of the Montauk Branch, which is why evening trains spend a lot of time dwelling there before heading east.
