PHOTOS; 2102 Return |
|
Posted by kp5308 on Mon May 30 21:33:01 2022 The ex-Reading T-1 4-8-4 powered the 18 car consist of the "Iron Horse Ramble" unassisted from North Reading PA to Jim Thorpe and return after 31 years in storage. Five years ago the restoration of the engine began and 2.4 million dollars later the first trip ran Saturday May 28th 2022. No major issues occurred on the 122 mile round trip and the "T Hog" was as loud as ever. We left at 9AM & returned at roughly 6:30PM smiling and covered with cinders due to riding the 4th car behind the engine with windows open. John from Jersey joined me plus George and Bert made this event their first excursion! We also made a diesel powered round trip on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic while in Jim Thorpe. Congrats to all the Reading and Northern staff involved for a job well done! All passengers will receive an envelope containing a 2102 magnet & pen, RBMN system map, Welcome Aboard letter, passenger car consist descriptions and a history of the Iron Horse Rambles booklet: The sun briefly popped out before departure but it was not to last: Cylinder cocks open and away we go at 9AM: We had varying intensities of rain the entire way to Jim Thorpe but the fans were out in force: The 2102 slipped from time to time on the wet rail going from Tamaqua up to Hauks but there was no doubt the engine was capable of handling the 18 car consist. We drifted into Jim Thorpe around noon: The rain is lighter as the 4-8-4 poses just east of the station: If you ride the steam train you can get tickets to hop on the 1PM trip up the Lehigh Gorge for an extra 10 bucks. Just call the RBMN ticket office at 610-562-2102 to get a reservation number and present it at the Jim Thorpe ticket window. I suggest riding on RBMN 22, the ex-Southern Railway Lookout Mountain. This car is also a veteran of the 60s excursion era and retains the original seating layout: We pass the T getting serviced as we leave town. You are permitted to walk back here to shoot the activity: Skies are clearing as GP38-2 #2013 accelerates the 9 car train: Unfortunately the rain returns as we return caboose first: The Memorial Day weekend is here and I thought this was a nice touch to the event. The engine will be available for cab tours at this location for all the IHR trips: We were told that 2 runbys will be at the station after the 3PM Gorge train leaves so we line up and watch blue sky and sunshine take over. Here comes the first one with just the engine: Then back down to pick up the train: Runby number 2 passes then stops to pick us up for the return trip: We leave around 4: And the pacers join us on PA54 at Nesquehoning. We are 4 cars behind the engine and the sound of the T-1 working the train up this grade is just fabulous. I want to hear the audio these guys are recording: Traffic on RT 209 below Tamaqua: Zehners: New Ringgold: Port Clinton: I intend on asking the family to access their back yard to get this shot of the train on the Peacock's Lock Bridge: These 2 RDCs will be making the same run on Sunday, leaving at 9AM. Occasionally they will do a Pottsville-Jim Thorpe trip when the big trains run but today they sit on the Tuckerton scale track: The parking lot is packed solid but lucky us...we are among the first ones off the train and have an easy exit so we high tail it out of there. John has at least a 2 hour drive and the George and Bert show has had it. What a day! For the record, the train used the ex-Philadelphia and Reading Main Line from Reading to Port Clinton, then the former Little Schuylkill Navigation Railroad (leased by the P&R in 1868) up to Hauks. The Nesquehoning Valley Railroad from Hauks to Nesquehoning Junction was completed in 1870 and immediately leased to the Lehigh and Susquehanna, then subleased to the Jersey Central along with the short stretch to Jim Thorpe in the same year. |
