Back in the old BMT Standard days, only one set of doors were open in each car as the train waited to leave in the winter at Rockaway Parkway.

Well, they are new and shiny, but what brutal design!

Oversize doors may make getting on and off slightly quicker, but what about the quality of the time spent riding? Reduce all longitudinal seating and smaller windows surely also reduce the quality of the riding experience.

The colors would not be my choice, but I'm willing to concede that to a matter of taste.

What are they going for here? Can efficiency not be achieved without sacrificing aesthetics? It's a shame that rolling stock as comparatively elegant as the R-46 will be replaced by these high-tech but ugly cars.

I have to agree. I thought that they had hit bottom with the R-62/R-68 tuna can interiors. Fact is that the public will still jam into and out of the cars, regardless of the interior, disappointed to find less seats, of course.

I actually like the interior in terms of appearance. However, I do NOT like the larger doors thus reduced seating. I HATE standing on the subway and riding these cars getting a seat is less likely.

I just hope they are fast and have good A/C like the current crop of NTT already in service. It's a long shot but I hope the MTA gets enough backlash for the reduced seating that they go back to the R160 door size for the R68s replacement cars, but that's unlikely.

The A/C is going to have a hell of a time keeping the R211s cool, what with their wider doors. And keeping the heat in during the winter is also going to be a challenge. Wouldn't want to ride those on the Culver in January.

I was wondering about the probable unfortunate vandalism situation especially now since it is on the rise.
Are the interior like the R-142 which are prone to carving and scratching? The R-68 was a disaster with this as well.
The R-160 is vulnerable to acid inside and out.
Then there is the spray paint exterior issue. WIth that blue and yellow striping, how will that hold up to graffiti removal chemicals?

Thank you

open gangway prediction (was) R211 photos

The open gangway style will also be cool when that gets delivered.

Goodbye isolating a car, and continuing in service. It will take too long to isolate a 5 car unit, discharging is the only option. Also you would have 1/2 the train in service, which means you have 1/2 the people on the platform rushing towards the open half. On the midnights you now have a 40 minute gap in service.

** This only applies if there is no provision for isolating individual cars in the unit, but without storms doors I cannot envision how. Remains to be seen, I may be wrong, who knows.

I'm still not sold on the anti-open-gangway argument. The percentage of trains I see and ride that have a car isolated is so small that I'm willing to accept the loss of those trains for the sake of open-gangway. Same, by the way, goes for the odor complaint, though admittedly odors are a little more frequent. But if one asks oneself what percentage of their trips actually involve a car that is so bad that you see everyone running away from it, I still think that number is too small that it should be taken into account for design purposes.

I think NTT cars should have been married pairs like Chicago's version of the NTT. Then they could have open gangway for each 2 car set. But they designed a car around their vendor's computer constraints, not the passenger.

If the MTA management had any sense (?) they would retain at least one end door in the cars at the entrance to the gangway so that if necessary, an individual car can be isolated. For those of you who remember, the C types while they had open gangways between the sections, also had sliding bulkhead door at the end of each section.
