Gambling had a big on air news team. WOR's newscasts ran for 15 minutes on the top of the hour. Jack Allen with the 5&6, Harry Hennessy at 7&9, Henry Gladstone at 8&10 with Peter Roberts on the half hour with a 5 minute summary and 5 minutes of "schtick". The way the state of radio is today, 1 person would be doing all those newscasts, but that discussion is for another message board.

Original MARTA cars were from Hitachi. I don't recall the subsequent orders.

L. A. bought from Breda, in 3 phases between 1991 and 2000. They were similar to the Miami Budds (interior seating arrangement was pretty much indentical). Then-SCRTD borrowed 4 Miami cars for testing, as Breda had a delay in delivering due to a subcontractor issues. They were not used in revenue service.

It may explain the drips and drabs along with the problems at the Pullman-Standard plant in delivering R-46s in a specified timeframe.

Are there any photos of this? That would be fascinating to see Budds along the LA Subway. Very interesting to learn about this.

The Motor Bus Society had a convention in LA prior to the Red line opening.
We were invited to the LAMTA shops to see the operations. Some Miami cars were there.

There was an open house at the Red Line yard in May 1992 held inside the main shop. The 4 Miami cars were parked toward the back. I took pictures, but I can't seem to find them at the moment. The pairs were 126/127 and 141/142 (note: 126/127 is actually a mismatched pair, as at Miami (and L. A. for that matter), the even-numbered car is the higher number (so 126 should have been with 125, and 127 with 128). Instead you have 126/127 and 125/128. Not sure what happened there, at L. A., there are a bunch of mismatched cars. Probably because of the delays at Breda that I previously mentioned, probably RTD just paired whatever odd numbered car with whatever even number car. This was just with the first phase (501-530). the second phase (531-572) and third phase (573-604) are all properly matched (AFAIK, as most of those cars arrived after I left L. A. in mid-1998. I did got back for a visit in late June 1999, and rode the Red Line to Hollywood/Vine, which had just opened weeks earlier).

BTW, in May 1992, I had only been to Miami once (in August 1978, when Metrorail was but a gleam in some planner's eye). So the first time I laid eyes on a Miami car was 2,700 miles away from their home.

Was he at least doing it because there wasn't enough room for the incoming M-1 parts?

If I remember correctly when the M-1s were introduced they couldn't run into Brooklyn until the station was modified to accept them as they were longer than any of the older cars. There may have been power distribution issues too as the M-1s had air conditioning which was definitely absent on the MP54 cars.

We dont know why other than he was cocky.

But it made littles sense to scrap MP54 parts when LIRR maintenance knew nothing on how to maintain an M-1, knowing perfectly well the concurrent PC Budd Metroiner MU was also bug ridden and a horse designed by committee.

All that mattered to Ronan was "new" and to splash silver and blue paint on everything.

Brooklyn had a length issue and signal issue with M-1's.

MP72's, MP75's (air conditioned) and MP70-Wyer cars started running to Brooklyn in 1969. The M-1 did not until 1970. It may have been the conversion from 3 to 7 spect ASC speed codes, or substations but I don't know.

Only once or twice by accident. They were at the east end of the consist and there was one track in Brooklyn terminal in which they would not knock things off the ceiling.

The heavyweight Pullman Parlor cars went there for inspection trains. They were taller than MP72's.
