BTW the R32s haven't ran in passenger service since the fall of 2020. Surprised the shop forces at 207th street seem to like the R32s, I thought maintaining a fleet of 55+ year old cars would be a headache, guess not.If they don't return the service when the C line headways are increased I think 32s are done, barring another massive R179 failure. |

I had a car from the 90s and in the late 2000s, the mechanics would always say my car was an easy fix because it didn't have all of the computerized and specialized parts. And it was cheaper to fix too. |

If the city was smart, the R32s would get their own line, designed primarily for tourists. Refresh the best 1/2 of the remaining cars, use part time —-> 50 more years. The R32 meta-line would not run during rush hours, only tourist hours. Give those characters a name and a role. Nickname them “The Indestrucibles” (forgetting GOH and rebuilds) and note that everything from the stainless steel to the seats was Made In USA. I’ll bet some of our local hollywood talent would make a catchy video for $0 and their name at the end. In-car visuals would be vintage ads on some trains, movie-themed on others, photo history of building the cars themselves. Stops which had prominent movie placement would be announced, but on the R32 trains only. Also, restore the field shunt. These trains aren’t the best for regular service, they are the best for character. They’re also entirely designed and built in USA. If we ever have an EMP, whether natural (Carrington Event) or non-natural, the R32s will be the only operable trains. There are still people who want to be proud of their country here, here’s something real to be proud about. It’s also a quiet rebuke to the “make the country borrow and print air money, give it to China to build our stuff, then lay around and smoke dope” mindset. |

I've said this several times previously but Budd was the best at building stainless steel car bodies. They began building stainless steel cars in the 1930s and patented the special welding process used for welding stainless steel parts together. The plant on Red Lion Road in Philadelphia where the R32 cars were built no longer exists having been demolished years ago. |

The Miami Dade Budd cars have not run in regular passenger service since July of 2020 so they've been OOS for almost a year now. They did make one spontaneous run in late October. Their final days in service were on weekends in March to June of last year (2020) where many new Hitachi sets would be out of service for inspection and upgrades while they ran Budd sets in place. There are still a few cars on property that are operable but every single different one is OOS for one issue or another that they'd have to fix before returning them to service if they need be which more than likely won't happen again as the new Hitachi cars are serving well; they just have their own slew of door and software issues. For starters, the ATO system the Budds ran on is completely different than the CBTC like system the Hitachis use. The new system isn't 100% online yet so there's still teething issues with the Hitachis including signs that won't program or having to move the train a few inches or reset / dump the train because the doors won't open thinking it's not aligned on the platform properly while it most certainly is considering most stations are for 6-car trains and they only run 4-car sets for now. On May 15, for some weird reason two 4-car Budd sets were sent all the way down the line to the Dadeland South tail tracks and are likely still there if anyone wants to see them or get pics. Look from the south end of the Dadeland S station or walk along the Busway for the first block and they're parked there, compressors on and everything. The cars are: 175-176+174-173 & 110-109+161-162 . They're probably there for storage and they're still marked OOS from passenger use for different issues. Okay, one set is still technically in service but NOT for passengers: track and guideway now uses four cars for rail inspection purposes similar to the tech the track geometry cars NYC uses. HOWEVER that set is also OOS now for serviceable issues and they've been borrowing a Hitachi set for that job since last December. One could find a Budd set moving very slowly down the line and back up in the middle of the night once in a while but that was their last hurrah. They're pretty much done for and won't ever see passenger service again unless something drastic were to happen to the Hitachis and at this point they're teethed in enough for regular full service, although TECHNICALLY the official reason states the Budds won't be 100% removed off property until the Hitachis can preform as expected, glitch free and all issues resolved with the CBTC system 100% up and running. Baltimore's Budd cars are still 100% in regular service, however were rebuilt by Alstom in 2005 and run very smooth and clean. They will be replaced by their own order of Hitachis soon by next year. The Budds of Miami were never rebuilt their entire life and featured original Budd components. Screechy, scratched up and daunting. Those trains were intense yet sleek, almost like a Floridian R32. Will definitely miss them despite only getting their last days in June of 2020. I have hours of footage that will soon be compiled and posted on YouTube for their last days in June 2020 as well as them sitting by the Busway (they're probably still there as of today June 18 2021 so if you're in Miami get some pics :D ) |

It’s too bad the R-38s couldn’t have been built by Budd and possibly even the 40s and 42s. The timing was a bit off at the time because given the right circumstances, the R-36s could have been built by Budd and that would have made quite a fleet for the 1964 World’s Fair. |

Great pictures especially the last photo! I always appreciate seeing those Miami Budds in their original livery. (Yes I clearly see the respective photo copyrights).I hope a few of these cars are preserved somehow. I did hear of four cars possibly being sent to a railroad museum somewhere in Florida but I'm not sure of the details and it seems there's no moves being made to make that happen so far. Presumably the biggest issue with keeping the Miami Budd cars in service is the fact that parts for these trains haven't been manufactured in many years and basically up until the end some sets were being cannibalized just to keep the others running. Had parts for these trains been continuously readily available there's a chance they may have been rebuilt and still be in service today. The Hitachi order was basically a decision made because it would have cost more to retrofit and rebuilt the Budd cars rather than just order new trains, which they did and we have today. There were several plans over the years to retrofit and upgrade the cars, each time plans falling through. The most notable was a planned slanted front retrofit inspired by the R40 Slant design. There was an order of Budd cars built for another country that had a slanted front end and presumably it would have looked similar to that. This was planned in the 90's and of course it was one of several that never happened and throughout their entire life they never received a general overhaul. The only things that have changed on those trains since day one is the livery on the outside and door chime, that's about it. I hope MDT sees enough value to run a Legacy train retirement ceremony one day, similar to what PATCO did on 6/10/18 for the final run of their unrebuilt Budds & Vickers before retrofit. |

The appearance of cars on the SubwayLink are identical to those on the Metrorail (and vice versa), as the two agencies built their systems at the same time and saved money by sharing a single order.[1] Trains draw power from the electric third rail. Cars are semi-permanently attached in married pairs, and are arranged as 4-car trains on the Metrorail. The trains on the SubwayLink are arranged as 2-, 4- and 6-car consists. The SubwayLink fleet had a significant overhaul between 2002 and 2005. Seats were reupholstered, and the floors were replaced. External destination rollsigns were replaced with LED displays; internal systems that display train destinations and upcoming stop announcements were also installed.[citation needed] There was a planned refurbishment for the cars on the Metrorail,[2] but it was later to decided to purchase new cars after it was found that the fleet was never maintained properly.[3] Replacement Because of the improper maintenance of the Metrorail cars, Miami-Dade announced a $313 million purchase of 136 new Metrorail cars from Hitachi Rail Italy (formerly AnsaldoBreda) in November 2012.[4][5] The first new trainset entered service in early December 2017.[6] In July 2017, the Maryland Transit Administration announced the purchase of 78 new railcars from Hitachi Rail Italy to replace the entire SubwayLink fleet. The cars will be similar in appearance to those purchased for the Miami Metrorail.[7] Universal Transit Vehicle as seen on the Baltimore Metro SubwayLink In service 1983–present (Metro SubwayLink) 1983–2020 (Metrorail) Manufacturer Budd Company Constructed 1982–1986 Entered service 1983–1987 Scrapped 2018– Number built 236 Number in service 50 Number scrapped 136 Formation 2 cars per trainset (married pair) Capacity 332 passengers per pair (166 per car) (664 passengers per 4-car train; 996 per 6-car train) Operator(s) Maryland Transit Administration (1983–present) Miami-Dade Transit (1983–2020) Line(s) served Baltimore Metro SubwayLink (1983–present) Green Line/Orange Line (1983–2020) Specifications Car body construction Stainless steel Train length 150 ft (46 m) (single pair) 300 ft (91 m) (4-car train) Car length 75 ft (23 m) Width 10 ft (3.0 m) Height 12 ft (3.7 m) Doors 3 pairs per side Maximum speed 75 mph (120 km/h) (design) 65 mph (105 km/h) (service) Electric system(s) 750 V DC Current collection method Third rail Track gauge 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) |

I remember those days well. They had serious growing pains accompanied by shop forces that were unacquainted with the new animal. This resulted in many overtired MP-54s getting a stay of execution, being held together with the equivalent of duct tape & chicken wire. The resulting near chaos in the scheduling resulted in dozens of train annulments when the MP54s could answer the bell & thousands of late commuters. On all news WINS & WCBS, they would have news, weather, sports & LIRR train cancellations all together in their daily broadcasts |

MP54's were built 1908 -1930. 2/3rds of them got a rebuild in the late 1950's mainly the ones from 1923 and up. So there were good ones and bad ones. But Ronan walked in one day in 1967 and ordered rare spare parts store rooms to scrap their inventiory. That is what caused the fleet to fall apart. The 4100 and 4900's of 1930 probably should have been cherry-picked and sent to Staten Island in 1971. There was also ongoing labor strife going on in the shops in 1969.I remember one sumemr Sunday, out wth my family, there were so disgusted with the M-1's, of which there were about 100 at the time, almost everything running was an MP54, and eveything ran fine, except we sat outside Jamaica for a while as an M-1 had broken down. |

"But Ronan walked in one day in 1967 and ordered rare spare parts store rooms to scrap their inventiory."Yep. I remember that too. All done, no doubt in anticipation of the M1 arrivals. A serious error in judgement on his part. He should have had his feet held to the fire for that one. The other complication was Rockefeller promising to make the LIRR the "finest commuter railroad in the country". When the laughing stopped , may thought that he lost his mind. This extra pressure no doubt was felt by Ronan & his crew with the resulting flow of bad decisions. |

Marty Wayne on WNYC was good at that too. I think it was the 7:57 Babylon to Brooklyn that didn't run for a yar, then had press people on baord when the day it did return (with MP54's). |

I use to listen to John Gambling and Peter Roberts in the morning. WOR had strong signal, I got it in Philadelphia, Pa. The last 120 of the 620 M-1 were to convert the 44 T72 trailers to push-pull, scrap the 23 year old 62 double deckers, and scrap the 19 year old 20 MP70 "Wyer" cars that had an availability ratio of 97%.Then in 1972 he ordered another 150 M-1's from Vickers and GE to replace all remaining MP72 and MP75, which ran fine, and whose conversion to push-pull took until 1979. He never learned anything from anything. But 1,000 Arinine junk had to keep running until 1976. I have vague memories of around 1963 of a bunch of Pennsy MP54's parked near the mail siding west of Jamaica. Perhaps they had some spare parts LIRRR's own MP54's and P54's needed, but I can't imagine what except maybe resistior grids, brake compressors, trucks, or cab contol parts. |

I couldn't stand his show. Harry Hennesey did the "news" at 7am for minutes, which was mostly commercials, sports, and weather. My father brought his transistor radio to the bathroom, then in the kicthen I tuned to WNYC. |

"But 1,000 Arinine junk had to keep running until 1976."Simple. Suburban commuters, all those rich white flighters had the $$$ & political clout. City folks didn't. That may explain why the R1-9s were replaced in dribs & drabs from 1968-77. But in defense of the TA, lets not forget the numbers. 1700 R-19s v/s 600-700 M-1s. Easier to replace @700 cars (LIRR pre M1 fleet) v/s 1700 R-1-9s which required several contracts from several builders over the years. |
