And they lacked interior door gaskets, too. Ditto for the R-10s and R-16s.

On cars that had flush interior door windows, there was a difference between ACF and St Louis cars. ACF cars had more rubber gasket on the exterior.

So, permanently out-of-service subway cars are no longer "reefed", meeting a waterly end in the Atlantic Ocean?

The reef program ended long ago. Cars are scrapped the old fashioned way. I believe the scrapper is in Ohio.

In those days you avoided any 5xxx (R12-14-15) car since they were one step away from the scrap yard. The interior lights often didn't work and doors were often left locked out as well. Deliveries of new air conditioned R62 and R62A cars finally sent them to the scrappers.

There were 10 R-22s that interior gaskets, 7515 - 7524 which also had the hard plastic seats, speckled green interiors and single drop sash storm door windows.

I'm surprised they didn't remove the end signs as well, just for salvage reasons.
