In that second photo, I was told that those cabinets was a newsstand. The glass enclosed cabinets must have been for a display of chewing gum and other sundries. This seems to be an open air newsstand unlike the unusual enclosed types in today's system. Bill Newkirk |

My first thought is that it may have been used for the ticket taker to operate the exit gate while working at the box, leaving it closed when not needed to keep out fare-beaters. |
