IND East Broadway Station Tiles Completed. |
|
Posted by William A. Padron on Fri Mar 26 17:39:30 2021 I passed by the East Broadway station of the IND "F" line this afternoon (Friday 3/26/2021). All the trackside wall tiles have been replaced with new ones but still with the same classic IND font square design, thus no dramatic changes. The only thing I noticed that the thin borders look a little bit darker, but the middle tw0-row violet color band is still the same. This is the closest thing in seeing what a new IND station would have looked like when it opened during the 1930's. -William A. Padron ["E BWAY"] |

It was part of the Rutgers Street Tunnel / Sandy Recovery Project. All the older tiles on the train platform were chiseled off and removed, leaving at first a blank wall on each side. They were given a new concrete foundation to put the new tiles over, with new piping installed underneath. There were some platform improvements, and better passenger mobility adjustments, but no ADA elevators installed though yet in that project. -William A. All the older tiles on the train platform were chiseled off and removed, leaving at first a blank wall on each side At Roosevelt Av (E,F,M,R) (and many other stations) they attached the new tiles to the old, and there are now many areas where the old tiles have fallen off, taking the new tiles with them, leaving behind large ugly blank patches. It looks terrible for a recently rehabbed station, and it probably won't be fixed in our lifetimes. |

Then you have the 6th Ave. line, whose stations are still in remarkably good shape, tile-wise, except for W. 4th St. 34th St. doesn't count, since its original tilework has been removed. |

Probably because they were some of the last to be built. I remember when they turned on the florescent lights at 42nd and 47-50th and the stations looked clean and modern. Maybe they used a different kind of tile cement. |

I've always thought the tiles along 6 Av looked like they had a less glossy finish. I think Court Sq-23 St as well, which would have been tiled around the same time, but it's been a long time since I've been through there. |

That sounds a lot better than just sticking new tiles on top of the old ones, and having them fall off almost immediately, like at 7th/53rd.Also, I'm delighted that they replicated the IND font!!! |

I checked photos of the outer Fulton stations vs York St and except for the arrangement of thre tiles at York which was set more like bricks they look identical. |

I agree about replicating the font, I gotta see what changes for myself.I wonder how long the new tiles will last. Most of the original tiles lasted, what, ~80 years? |

The other recent (last two decades or so, anyway) IND renovation at Broadway-Lafayette has a very convincing replica of the IND typeface. Fulton-Nassau and ENY are somewhat less convincing, in particular the O is very oddly proportioned. The two-line "7TH/AVE" at 7/53 also follows the theme well enough, though it seems odd that they went with that when the original was a standard single line. |

At 7th/53rd, the tiles were pre-laid off-site on panels, about 4'x 6', and then the panels were hung on the walls. You can see the thick putty lines between the panels. Before they were hung, the panels were laying on the platform in a stack for all to see. When they were installed the workers used too much putty in some places, and it oozed out and smeared all over the new tiles. The mess was never cleaned properly and can still be seen today. From day one that installation looked terrible. That panel method has been used at other stations, but 7/53 looks the worst. The original tiles: |

My dad worked off of 7th/53rd around the time it was being renovated (1996). I distinctly remember the aforementioned panel tiling being installed and how great it looked initially. It aged quickly, along with other renovations in Manhattan (59th-CC, 42nd-PABT, Chambers/WTC). Panels might be a cost-effective renovation option but look ugly as fuck when you're seeing two layers of tile. |

Regarding the top photo, what was an A train doing at 7th Av/53rd St?Regarding the bottom photo, the color band looks green, like 125th Street, instead of purple, like it actually was. I wonder why. |

I don't really think any of them look great, but TBH I'd say the same about most other IND rebuilds. |

The stripe is standard IND style tiles, despite being thinner and having the name tiles within them. The name tiles are standard IND letter tiles as well. The outer Fulton stations have beige tiles. The station name tiles are specially made multi-letter groups and the stripes are of a unique design. A few other stations were built to this overall design- 179 and Hillside as well as the lower level of 42/8. |
