Atlanta's subway mileage |
|
Posted by Joe on Fri Nov 6 13:43:39 2020 Georgia and politics are much the topic today. That sent me to an internet search for MARTA and its five-route system totaling a mere 47 miles. Yet, its fleet numbers over 300. Is it a large system or small system? Apparently, the only venture outside the city is to the airport. I understand there is a serious problem with photography, so it is not exactly railfan-friendly. I do prefer the cross-wise seating than the bowling alley we have on our wide-car B division. Any thoughts from subchatters who have traveled there? Thank you. |

Lost a lot of bus routes. Subways are currently running Sunday schedules 7 days a week. That means 20-25 minute headways on the lines. I didn't get to see the trains, but I could hear the station horn from my hotel. Didn't hear many. I was just there. They say highway traffic is less than 10% below normal now, but the rest wasn't the same. |

I saw either the cobblink I think it was going to the arts center station somewhat regularly. Some MCI buses. Too.I didn't really get a full overview, wanted to get out of there before the traffic hit on a Monday. |

Atlanta has the added benefit of being in the foothills afaik, so like anywhere with mountains, the roads wind around in ways where you can never figure out how to get around if you don't know what your doing.Give me a grid at least. |

I spent several months in 1967 as a New Yorker in New Mexico. I left New Orleans in December on a Greyhound bus through to Port Authority NY. We changed to Eastern Standard Time about dawn. A few hours later, we moved along an Atlanta street. When I saw a store sign PASTRAMI, I knew I was nearing home! |

What a different world things must've been. Even the 1980's south doesn't exist anymore. Everything all looks the same now.I couldn't imagine what that must've been like. |

Fuck MARTA and their photo ban!!Those 2 pics I took on the mezzanine level at Five Points, with a couple of MARTA cops not too far away. Granted they had their backs to me, and I was using my phone. If they had looked over, I'm just a guy looking out at the platform area (my body hid my phone). Also, I left a few minutes later to headed down to the platform, where I took this: A couple of interior pics Took these on 11/11/15. A day trip to ATL to burn a credit on Southwest, so flew FLL-ATL-FLL. Red Line from the Airport to 5 Points, Gold Line back (Red and Gold lines run identical route from the airport to 5 points) Outbound plane was N7831B, a 737-7CT that WN obtained form Westjet. The only WN plane I have flown on that has the Heart livery Full itinerary for Ship 7831 was FLL-ATL-AUS-MSY-MCO-RDU-BNA (gotta love point-to-point!) 🙂 Returned on N442WN, a legacy 737-7H4. At the gate in ATL After arrival at FLL, drove over to the viewing area to see Ship 442 leave for its next stop. Itinerary was ATL-FLL-RDU-HOU |

Posted by JRR4 on Sat Nov 7 09:02:08 2020, in response to Atlanta's subway mileage, posted by Joe on Fri Nov 6 13:43:39 2020. There are two major problems with the MARTA rail system as I see it, and I live in GA.1) Only two tracks so no way to implement express service, even peak direction express service. Therefore the rides are slow and seem clunky. 2) The trains don't really go anywhere. If you want to hop a train from the airport parking lots to downtown for a game at one of the downtown stadiums (Mercedes Benz or Ga Tech) to avoid downtown parking it works, but otherwise it just doesn't go anywhere. |

Posted by Dr. Casca on Sat Nov 7 15:04:52 2020, in response to Atlanta's subway mileage, posted by Joe on Fri Nov 6 13:43:39 2020. The MARTA subway system is basically comprised of two main trunks: the NORTH-SOUTH Trunk (North-South RED line and the Northeast-South Gold Line) and the EAST-WEST Trunk (The Blue and Green Lines). The RED runs from Sandy Springs to the Airport, the GOLD from Doraville to the Airport, the BLUE from Hamilton E. Holmes to Indian Creek, and the GREEN from Bankhead to Edgewood/Candler park. Frequencies on each individual line range from 15-30 minutes, depending on the time of day, with the frequency in the trunks being half that. So, if you heard of the fleet size being around 300 or so, that sounds about right, with their system running mainly 6-car trains (2-car or 4-car on the GREEN depending on the time of day). Two tracks on all lines, with a few double-crossovers here and there for single-tracking and a few turnback tracks for short-turns. Apparently, the only venture outside the city is to the airport. Much of the subway is within the city of Atlanta, though there are parts that reach the rest of Fulton County, parts of Dekalb County, and even a bit into Clayton County. The RED/GOLD south of Lakewood-Fort McPherson is in Fulton County, except for College Park, which is in Clayton County. The RED/GOLD north of Buckhead (RED) and Lenox (GOLD) is also Fulton County. The BLUE east of East Lake is in Dekalb County, and the GREEN LINE is entirely within Atlanta city limits. In the 1970s, MARTA was formed to be a regional transit provider, which would have included Fulton, Dekalb, Clayton, Cobb, and Gwinnett Counties, and subway service would have been extended into those areas. Cobb and Gwinnett counties rejected the inclusion, and Clayton rejected at first, but was then included rather recently. Cobb and Gwinnett have their own bus systems to connect to MARTA stations and to Downtown and Midtown Atlanta. The system isn't really as bad as people make it out to be, as far as the reach towards the suburbs, but the frequencies and the types of people that ride during most hours of the day might be a deterrent for most people to use the system. Note: I did rent a car for the duration of my trip for easier mobility in the area, but I did utilize one of the park-and-ride facilities and took the subway into town for one of those days. I understand there is a serious problem with photography, so it is not exactly railfan-friendly. As for photography, here is the policy on that: MARTA Photography and Film Policy Basically, for most photography needs, one must contact MARTA ahead of time, online via email, and then head to the MARTA Headquarters, near the Lindburgh Center Transit Station, to pick up the letter of authorization to then take photos and have proof in case you are stopped by MARTA Transit Police. During the time I was there (back in March), I managed to get a few photos here and there in the MARTA system even before I actually went to the HQ for official permission. I snuck a few here and there, just like another poster has shown, and I wasn't stopped or questioned. I had attempted prior permission before my trip, but when I finally made it down there, I called up and asked about it. The person responsible for the permits finally told me to head to Lindburgh Center to meet with her and get the authorization. She gave me her business card as well. Other than that, no issues down there, though it could have gone another direction. That is my $0.02. --Dr. C |

It only addresses commercial photography and filming but makes no mention either way of personal photography. |

True, according to the website, it only mentions commercial photography and filming explicitly, but as I made contact to their department that deals with that stuff, it also applies to personal photography. Permission in writing is granted once you talk to them and see them in person. You get a written letter on MARTA letterhead and a business card from the person in that department. It's almost reminiscent of MBTA's photo permit policy pre-2006.--Dr. C |
