What's The R32 Status?

Posted by Nilet on Fri Mar 20 16:12:30 2020

If the R32s are going to be retired by the end of March, I will not get a chance to ride them. :(

Is there any possibility that they might outlast the pandemic? Will there at least be an official "Farewell To The R32s" fantrip once the day arrives that such a trip won't be a massive public health hazard?

I would think that beating the Coronavirus epidemic is much more important than worrying about when the R32's final run will take place before or after the 100 percent "stay home" order is lifted.

Since there's no conflict between the two, there's no need to prioritize them. It's not like I have to go out to ask about the R32s.

I agree. I believe even after the last train is taken out of service, they will hold one over for an official trip. They certainly earned a curtain call since their garbage can brothers got two last trips

They did that for the R42. But they know there is far more emotion behind the R32 (older, Budd-built, etc, from when this country knew how to build durable products).

Well said sir. In regards to the R32 commuting to work, all this week all I had seen and rode was the R46 and R179 on the C and all R179 on rare occasions I’ve caught the A. All this week I haven’t seen or even heard any R32s.

They did an official last trip for the R42s— midday on a weekday.

Even if I can make an official last trip, I don't relish the prospect of fighting for a RFW, but I never managed to get any 4K RFW video of the Rockaways.

Maybe I'll book another nostalgia train and show up with a sticky so that I can attach the camera to the RFW without needing to stand at it. Or maybe the MTA will let me stick the camera to the RFW of an R46 for a reasonable fee. If they're willing to let anyone with cash rent an entire train, then a minute or two in the cab of a stationary train shouldn't be out of the question.

The final R32 day should be several trips back and forth to reduce the surge. Maybe run one as the C, the other as a J.

It won't. They'll be packed from the start of the first trip to the end of the last. Or at least the first car will be.

Maybe run one as the C, the other as a J.

I was hoping for an A.

I'd run them on the Q or the N. They started their careers on the BMT Southern Division; in fact, I still think of the R-32s as BMT cars. My very first subway ride was on a shiny new R-32 N on July 21, 1965.

The MTA wouldn’t want to run them on any line where there might be even the remotest possibility they could be rerouted through the Montague St tunnel where they are banned. That rules out all Southern Division lines.

With the order to avoid close contact between people, the MTA will probably just quietly remove the last R-32 from service without any proper announcement just to avoid attracting a large crowd.

If the R42 final run was any indication, 6 cars won't be enough lol. If such a final run was to happen for the 32s it has to be an 10 car train.

It was always nice to catch a last trip, not an official one. Not every class of cars get the retirement watch either. I happened to get lucky and catch a trip with one of my former motormen going to work southbound and he was assigned a putin out of 207 with the last 2 R38s available for service. I don't think the R44s had a dedicated last trip either. There are those trips like those Mr. R10 would have down as last official trips like the R10 or the R30, not including fan trips, which are their actual last runs, and those trips TA had ceremonies for, like the last grafitti C train or the tradition which started with the IRT redbirds which appear staged, even though still a final.

I agree. If the MTA announces a last run or two for the R32s It will be a PR disaster inasmuch being a total nose thumbing of the social gathering restriction. Today, no large crowds, no last runs, not now anyway. The best IMO anyone can hope for is to keep a 10 car set in mothballs & have a ceremonial last run sometime in the future.
But realistically, thats wishful thinking. The reef is waiting.

I believe the R32s will just sit in storage a few months after they are retired, all of the remaining 50 R42s are still on the property even though they have been retired for a while now.

If the pandemic is over by lets say June and the 32s are retired this month.. perhaps they can take 10 cars out of storage, give a little tune up so their road worthy and then run the final trip.

The R32s have been in post GOH rebuild configuration on the A and C longer than they were ever on the BMT in as-delivered form. I would say they are most at home with silver doors, a shitty flip dot route indicator, and screeching brakes on the IND 8th Av line.

We took a TT to visit my father's cousin in July of 1965. We'd gone into Manhattan that morning on another shiny new R-32 N and took the Circle Line, then headed back to Brooklyn that afternoon. My father's cousin lived just off the 71st St. stop on the West End.
