PHOTOS: Reading Switcher Returns Part 2

Posted by kp5308 on Mon Mar 16 21:23:52 2020

Part One covered the cross country move of Reading SW1200 #2719 from Stockton CA as far as Temple PA. The Reading Company Technical and Historical Society received permission from the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad to use the Society's two serviceable locomotives (with an RBMN crew) to pick up the donated switcher for the trip to Hamburg.

Our ex-CSX GP39-2 would be making its first trip in public for this duty so it would be necessary to cover the CSX logos per the donation agreement. After changing the 7 oil filters:

We covered the CSX(s) with 30 gallon black trash bags held in place with the Great American Fix-all...duct tape. Worked just fine. We also changed the engine number to the Reading assigned 3412:

Per RBMN edict 2 engines must be used on all movements. Paul Payne adds oil to the friction bearing boxes of NW2 #103 and gives the elderly EMD the once over before we leave for Temple:

The engines leave the Museum for Temple around noon. First job is moving an MU car out of the way:

I decided to chase rather than ride so here are some on the way down shots...Dauberville:

Milepost 28 near Leesport. I do not know what is 28 miles away:

Crossing US222 outside Temple:

The NW2 is parked and the 3412 pulls the SW out of the siding. Paul & Duane ride:

One-O-Three couples itself to the 678:

Crossing PA Route 61 on the return trip. Those blue Lowe's plastic paint buckets cap the stacks nicely:

The NW2 looks every bit of the 73 years old that it is:

Passing the former site of the Society's home at Leesport:

The threesome arrives at Hamburg around 2:30 and gets tied down while the gang hits CP ARBYS for lunch. I got adult stuff to do so I head on back to Blandon. A boxcar and an MU car will need to be moved before the 678 can be placed:

Sunday Karen & I stopped by the Museum yard to check on how it all worked out. It is HOME!

I was thinking about that 678... Why not pull the prime mover out and replace it with BATTERIES!

Part of the "historical" argument for saving the locomotive is the 567 prime mover. It will make a really nice display locomotive and can be completely lit for a night photo session. Those batteries it arrived with are in need of a charge and that's it. It is very clean with little rust on any part of the engine.

What value is an inoperable 567C? It's something? Good source of scarce parts if nothing else, but 567C's and D's are still around and generally maintainable. BNSF's whole fleet of GP39M/R/U's have 576 blocks with 645 power assemblies.

Another option would be to make it into a road slug or a cab car leaving the engine in place.
