Update on Septa Route 15 Trolleys

Posted by TransitChuckG on Thu Jan 30 05:00:41 2020

A couple of things, from Facebook. (Nothing official from Septa, yet!!!!)

This first one looks promising, it was from guy who attended the Capital budget hearings.

Here is the update from SEPTA at today's Capital Budget Open House on the future of the trolleys.
Let me begin. They are committed to keep the 15 a trolley. The I 95 Construction and bridge replacement over CSX just west of the Zoo will keep the trilleys off the line till those projects are finished. As for the future they are looking at plans to extend the 15 trolley to Malvern Loop. Also they will look at extending the 36 to Eastwick Station to provide closer access to the area around PNC Eastwick. Also all day service on the 13 to Darby will be looked at. A new car storage facility will be needed (The old GE Plant at 70th & Elmwood possible site). Also as a result of longer articulated cars that might require replacement of Callowhill Depot too. I will also tell you this. They are looking at a way to get the Suburban trolley over to the heavy maintenance shop. This might I repeat might include a new connection on Chester Pike between Sharon Hill and Darby. This is because articulate trolley would be hard to flat bed on a tractor trailer. I am really impressed with their commitment to the trolley system. The SEPTA representative admits that SEPTA has had a poor reputation of commitment to trolleys but assures those day are over. This is becoming a top priority. From talking to the staff meeting and offering my suggestions they really want public input on this. I was hestitant to post the Chester Pike idea but two of us on this page were directly told this. The other option is for the El to pull the suburban cars to 19th Street where there was once a connecting switch between the El and Subway Surface for that reason. When asked how u would do if. I quickly answered the Chester Pike connection.

Another posting...

So after speaking to SEPTA directly tonight (including some big names from the Trolley division), they double-downed on the PCC-IIs coming back and even state they are debating on adding Pantographs to them in order to prepare the 15 for Light Rail upgrades ahead of the new fleet. The overhaul of the cars has commenced as well. The Pan upgrades are not funded at the moment as it still being debated on. Though they also wanted to reassure us, that management changed hands 3 times since 1992 and that 1992 is 27 years ago and they are not 1992 SEPTA.

Car #2332, which sat outside Woodland shop for 2 years, is now inside getting overhauled, along with a second PCC-II.. 2332

Pants.. and pole, look closely. Some pants in the front, and some in the back. What ever floats your boat.

If it can stay a trolley, that'd be great!! And if the PCCs really cannot be made fit for regular service, why not just use modern equipment on the 15?

I agree. Modern equipment or previously owned, like Toronto's old trolleys.

THE GAUGES ARE :
Philly 5 ft. 2 1/4"

Toronto 4 ft. 10 7/8 "

Difference 4 3/8 " needed or 2 3/16 per side

Can spacers be used?

Ohh, they "thought" about doing something. That's as certain as all of these HSR corridors they "thought" about back in the 1970's!

That's the right side of the car, isn't it?

Yes, you are CORRECT! I was mistaken by the rear end looking so much like a front end.

The trucks can be regauged, but the CLRVs aren’t ADA compliant and may not be able to be adapted.
