The first in our new batch of 17 new ALP-45A dual-mode locomotives

Posted by TransitChuckG on Thu Nov 21 03:47:35 2019

The first in our new batch of 17 new ALP-45A dual-mode locomotives is rolling off the assembly line as part of NJ TRANSIT's investment in your new fleet.
The new dual-mode locomotives will replace the oldest locomotives in the fleet, and can operate in electric mode under overhead wires, and under their own power in non-electrified territory - improving both the versatility and reliability of the rail fleet.

They decided that at 12 million a pop, they were too much of a bargain to pass up another batch of them.

As far as reliability, AFAIK NJT doesn't release MDBF numbers for anything, so, who really knows? The ones NJT already has are supposedly getting some rather heavy maintenance for such new units...

Scandalous waste of money. They do not need the E-mode of those locos. They have 35 of them already. Only 10 per day are needed for dual-powered capability. They don't need any more electric locos.

Metra bought bunch of F59's that came off lease from the west coast for about $1 million each. Not good enough for NJT's spoiled brats.

F59PHIs are too tall for NJT clearances even on the Hoboken Division.

In theory every Long Branch train should be using one as well as any diesel service on the M&E. This could be part of a plan to slowly expand electrification.

I think these locos are a hindrance to electrification.
