The School Street crossing right by Holy Rood Cemetery. School Street becomes Salisbury Park Drive on the other side of Old Country Road. I drive through that crossing often, sometimes by bicycle. |

He says all three of the vehicle's occupants died."LIRR Twitter says "The LIRR is operating an extra diesel train from Jamaica at approximately 9:35PM that will travel up the Central Branch and stop at Hicksville.". What is the "Central Branch" (isn't Westbury part of the Main/Central branch)? Do they mean go from Jamaica to Babylon, then reverse move to Hicksville? |

I always thought the platform ends should be beveled so at to catch and redirect the train back to the trackway should this happen, but is probably so rare for a train to be derailed at just the right place and by a limited amount for the idea to be worthwhile. Except for today. The train held up very well, considering it hit a concrete slab! |

There was a brief attempt recently by the state of Connecticut to require all trains passing platforms to slow down. I suspect if anyone higher up feels the need to "do something" about this, that will be the outcome for the LIRR, which would be murder on schedules... |

While going through a crossing gate is like playing Russian roulette I can almost understand why the driver thought he could make it. Many of Long Island's railroad crossings are next to stations and because of that the gates go down before the train enters the station and if a train is stopping at the station there is a very long wait. While I don't know if the E/B train stopped at the station but I'm assuming it did and I'm assuming the driver was familiar with that and finally said "fuck that, I'm not waiting".Of course that's not always the case as the most deadly crossing accident where 9 kids died in a van in 1982 was at the old Herricks Road Crossing which was not near any station. Only one person in that van survived, the daughter of a state senator. |

Forgive my ignorance, but is this one of the grade crossings to be eliminated by the Third Track Project? Either way, this accident shows that busy grade crossings just don't work in busy urban/suburban areas. Yes, of course people should be smart and STOP when they see the flashing lights and gates. But human nature is what it is...Now, we have 3 dead humans (still sad even if the driver was to blame) and significant property damage to the LIRR station and rolling stock. |

Maybe the westbound from Ronkonkoma to Penn could be considered a reverse commute. People intending to get off at Jamaica would sit in the rear cars, where the Jamaica elevators are. People intending to get off at Penn Station would probably sit in the rear cars, because that is where 7th Avenue is. Those loading preferences may have saved many injuries in the first cars. Also, I note that off-hours on westbound trains from Babylon, the lead two cars are often closed to revenue passengers. |

I remember crossings with nothing more than a white RxR sign, no lights. As a teenager I recall being shocked to find such a thing, I'd driven across it and only realized there were tracks AFTER I'd gone over it .. at a teenaged rate of speed, which launched the front wheels into the air. There was not even a stop sign. It's possible the tracks were abandoned or not in service, but the rails were in place and the ROW was intact. This was in a million $ suburb not on a farm road in Kansas. I was shocked to discover that an RxR without at least huge overhead lights and bells even existed, I'd only ever seen gated, belled crossings up to that point. Someone who drives around RR gates with red lights flashing and is not at that moment filming a movie chase scene, is a gun being fired at the public random direction. I don't mind if they scrap themselves, the problem is they are the same cretin every other minute they're driving. Sooner or later they'll T-bone another car, clip a pedestrian or kill a bicyclist. (I can't bike now, but to me it's the ideal short-distance transportation - it makes YOU stronger and faster while managing HDL/LDL. Even a Hellcat Hemi can't do that.) Nope, we don't need to create limited height overpasses the entire length of every line. Instead, the RR needs to sue people who go around the gates and cause even a ten minute delay. Obviously they need to have a procedure to deal with the occasional false gates-down, but doesn't every crossing have a phone # posted? Anyway, this homicidal cretin wasn't going around a broken crossing, he was playing chicken with the train. You cant' not see the flashing lights on that thing! |
