I don’t think I’ve ever heard the term “train shed” in connection with the present GCT. I think of a train shed as an above-ground structure, arching over station tracks—as, for example, at St. Louis, Indianapolis, or Chicago’s long-gone Grand Central. Is the cavernous two-level track area of GCT really called a train shed?

Those are called great arch sheds. There are also the sheds designed by Lincoln Bush, e.g. Hoboken, CNJ Terminal, Toronto Union Station and others.

That distinguished railroading journal, Crain's, says that it is. :)

Maybe the MTA used that term in its press release.

I have. During CPC proceedings involving the replacement of JPMC HQ 270 Park
with a new skyscraper, that term was used repeatedly, since part of it is under the existing building, and it dictates where certain things can and cannot be in the new one.

Maybe the Governor will find a better way to do it. :-)

He'd call in a bunch of college professors who could replace it in 10 MINUTES. If they'd ever been on a roof that is.

Sure, old GCT had a classic arched trainshed; which is why I specified the present troglodyte GCT.

Imagine if the NY Central were permitted to extend its main line all the way to the Battery. Its great arch may have remained extant to this day. (Pipe dream, I know.)

On top of that, make it a through station with the B&O and CNJ, with trains going into NJ and through to Washington DC and elsewhere. Imagine riding from Albany to DC that way? Might be a less-open view of New York Harbor, but an important landmark in and of itself.
