Can you always tell gold from orange from yellow? (color vs number or letter lines) |

Posted by Fine, Howard, and Fine on Wed Nov 14 09:27:51 2018 Chart below plagiarized from Mapping the Colors of North America’s Transit Lines at Next City who got it from Ari Ofsevit a MIT Transportation Engineering grad student. Can you always tell the gold from yellow from orange? I usually cannot. Many of the properties, I could see how orange and red can be confused. A DC guy, Stephen Hudson, noting that he understands how colors might not work for NYC MTA: "Using line colors in New York would also be impractical, as there are simply too many lines. After eight or so lines, using colors for each different route becomes impractical as there are no longer primary or secondary colors left to use for names. The New York Subway already use a darker green for the 4, 5, and 6 trains, and a lighter green for the G trains, a darker blue for the A, C, and E trains, a lighter blue for the T trains, and so on." |

Or was there at one time or another when all lines had individual colors...?It's funny that the "S" shuttles are black on the map, but on the subway car bullets they're very gray in color (almost close to the "L" gray) |

Yes I can distinguish gold/yellow from orange in every case but many of those are closer than necessary. LA Metro started standardizing it’s colors 2-3 years ago and some of those seem off. The current (and past in my recollection) purple line is darker than shown. The orange may be slightly darker than shown as they look much more different on the metro map pdf than they do on that chart. Still too similar though. |

Yellow and orange can give me trouble unless the yellow is really yellow. |

Color distinctions that look fine in CMYK pigment on paper can look awful when converted to RGB by computer. While some transit agencies graphics standards specify both CMYK and RGB, and others specify RGB or CMYK, still others specify Pantone spot colors (which can be approximated but not always well in RGB or CMYK). Pantone colors that are distinguishable in spot color, can have their distinctions muddied in RGB or CMYK renderings. |

Originally, when the color for the N was established, it was more of a gold color with white lettering than the present yellow. For whatever reason, the contractor who supplied the signs when the line colors were changed was unable to duplicate the original color and substituted yellow. Since white on yellow is hard to see, the TA had to use black lettering on the yellow route signs. |
