The Wading River Branch was sadly abandoned in 1938 or 1939. A shame, as it would be useful today. The Right of Way is fully intact however, and owned by the Long Island Power Authority. Theoretically, the line could be opened again, as the ROW could be used, but of course, that will never happen, and unfortunately, the line will remain truncated at Port Jefferson:Wading River Station Site in 1998. Thanks. It is such a shame that some transit use can't be made of this station and the right of way. Ozone Park and the neighborhoods north to Rego Park could certainly use rapid transit and reactivating the line might help get some cars off the road. |

And Woodhaven and Ozone Park were very well built concrete stations. They would have had to rebuilt Parkside (Metropolitan Ave), and other stations if they added them, but either way, it's a real shame this wasn't retained for transit. The branch actually wasn't formally abandoned. It was put into "disuse", that's why all the signals, stations, and tracks remained (and still do). Unlike other routes, it wasn't officially abandoned and tracks ripped up. |

Low level platforms make me feel nostalgic, riding the train from Smithtown to Penn when I was 12 or 13, before parents would have a conniption fit letting a kid go to the City with two or three friends the same age.Sigh! Yes, the old diesels on the low level platform section was the best. The doors and stairways would be open in the vestibules, and you could just hang out in there. We didn't know how good we had it with those rolling disasters back then. And it wasn't "that" long ago. |

Until 1972, weekday off peak Far Rockaway and Long Beach trains ran every 45 minutes. Alternate trains ran express of each ran express to Valley Stream, the Long Beach running via the Montauk. Until 1972, weekday off peak Hempstead trains ran every 30 minutes. Alternate train ran express to Floral Park.
