Montauk Branch 1990s LIRR Station Photos

Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Thu Feb 15 11:57:17 2018

JoeV had asked if I had some photos of some of the old LIRR stations, here's some photos from the Montauk Branch of the stations, how they looked in the early 1990s. Some still active, and some of the ones that were closed in 1998, and some that were closed much earlier.
I am going to break them up into Branches, starting with Montauk Branch. I have just about ever station, but I skipped loading some:

Islip 1991, before high level platorm built 1998

Great River 1990, before high level platform

Port Jefferson/Wading River Branch 1990s LIRR Station Photos

The Wading River Branch was sadly abandoned in 1938 or 1939. A shame, as it would be useful today. The Right of Way is fully intact however, and owned by the Long Island Power Authority. Theoretically, the line could be opened again, as the ROW could be used, but of course, that will never happen, and unfortunately, the line will remain truncated at Port Jefferson:

This survived into the early 2000s. A sad day when it was discontinued. Even sadder when they demolished PD Tower.

These are all my 1990's photos of hooping at Patchogue:

And some random Patchogue Station photos from when the station was simpler and the trains more interesting:

Richmond Hill, 1998. Don't get too excited seeing the crowd......it was the most people the station had seen in many years....it was a Fantrip "Farewell to the old diesel equipment"...

(Sorry for the quality. It was pre digital, and I used slide film back then, and you couldn't just "snap away".

Springfield Gardens station was still there in 1993, although abandoned for years:

Thanks.

It is such a shame that some transit use can't be made of this station and the right of way. Ozone Park and the neighborhoods north to Rego Park could certainly use rapid transit and reactivating the line might help get some cars off the road.

Absolutely. And Woodhaven and Ozone Park were very well built concrete stations. They would have had to rebuilt Parkside (Metropolitan Ave), and other stations if they added them, but either way, it's a real shame this wasn't retained for transit.
The branch actually wasn't formally abandoned. It was put into "disuse", that's why all the signals, stations, and tracks remained (and still do). Unlike other routes, it wasn't officially abandoned and tracks ripped up.

Low level platforms make me feel nostalgic, riding the train from Smithtown to Penn when I was 12 or 13, before parents would have a conniption fit letting a kid go to the City with two or three friends the same age.

Sigh! What I wouldn't give to be able to relive those days again.

Yes, the old diesels on the low level platform section was the best. The doors and stairways would be open in the vestibules, and you could just hang out in there.
We didn't know how good we had it with those rolling disasters back then. And it wasn't "that" long ago.

I went over it today (for my semi-annual R32 fun day on the J train).
Being it is February and landscape is defoliated, looking down at Brooklyn Manor site, I don't think there is a piece of driftwood from that station left.

I think Parkside is in the same situation, as is Rego Park, and Grant Avenue

They did a partial rebuild on St ALbans as it was falling apart, retaining 2 or 4 cars open, and would have been abandoned with Springfield Gardens, except the V.A. got wind of it and said don't you dare.

Up until that era, alternate Far Rockaway trains skipped Locust Manor and alternate Hempstead train skipped Hollis.

Until 1972, weekday off peak Far Rockaway and Long Beach trains ran every 45 minutes. Alternate trains ran express of each ran express to Valley Stream, the Long Beach running via the Montauk.

Until 1972, weekday off peak Hempstead trains ran every 30 minutes. Alternate train ran express to Floral Park.

There were also East Williston Locals that ran every 90 minutes skipping only Bellerose.

Floral Park got a lot of service.
