Or add to the Holiday Special R-1/9 for a 10 car train in December. I didn't think there were any R-10's in running condition. What's their story? |

As a former M/M, the main objection I had to the R-27/30 cars was the heavy spring tension on the deadmans’ buttons of the WH master controllers. Starting with the IRT’s R-28s, WH changed the design of the controller handle back to what was on the WH Lo-Vs and BMT steels. It was supposedly done because the M/M were complaining about the spring tension on the WH controllers that had been in use for years on the R-1s through R-26s. it seems that BMT and IRT M/M claimed that the controller design on the WH Lo-Vs and Steels was easier to hold down than the controllers on the WH R-types. When WH accommodated the request, the company unfortunately increased the spring tension making the so called “improved” design harder to hold down that the ones being complained about. The worst of them were the R-29s through 30s. While the R-32 through 36 WH controllers were identical in appearance, the spring tension had been lessened considerably and those cars were much easier to operate. There was nothing worse for BMT M/M than getting a WH controller on a QJ trip between Jamaica and Stillwell not only on the outbound trio but on the return as well. One Sunday when I was a M/M on the RR, I had an R-27 with WH controllers on both ends and had that train for the first full round trip from Astoria to 95 St and another half back to 95 St. |
