Scrolling R160 side signs

Posted by gbs on Sat Mar 4 23:30:53 2017

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr

So for no apparent reason they've changed some of the side sign displays from EXP to EXPRESS, so "BROADWAY EXP" on the Q is now "BROADWAY EXPRESS" and "QUEENS BLVD EXP" on the E is now "QUEENS BLVD EXPRESS". (Note that BLVD is still abbreviated, so there's no consistency.)

As a result, the new displays don't fit all at once on the screen, so they scroll. But they scroll so stupidly. The screen completely blanks out, then the first character starts from the right and moves to the left until the last character goes all the way to the left and the screen is blank again, taking way too long before the next display can show itself. All that blank time adds no information at all.

If they must scroll, then the screen should fill with as much as can fit, for instance "BROADWAY EXPRE", and then scroll left until the last characters show themselves, like "OADWAY EXPRESS" and then disappear for the next display.

But they should just go back to EXP and let the display fit correctly without scrolling. What clarity is added by expanding the word and then requiring the scrolling?

Meanwhile the R188's on the #7 display "34-HUDSON" with room to spare, and "MAIN ST", not "FLUSHING-MAIN ST". Aren't the neighborhoods supposed to be displayed on the terminal station names?

They have not only changed the side signs, but also the announcements. The (Q) on the UES is no longer "via the Second Avenue line", and in Brooklyn is now "Coney Island - Stillwell Avenue bound" instead of just "Coney Island bound".

It also sounds like "(4) express" and "(5) express" trains are now just "(4)" and "(5)" trains while in Brooklyn.

What was the point of making these changes?

And anyone catch any other announcement changes recently?

Well, "QUEENS BLVD EXP" (15 characters) fits, but "BROADWAY EXPRESS" (16 characters) triggers the scrolling, so it seems that the display is 15 characters, assuming the characters are equally wide and not proportionally spaced.

Some E trains still have the shorter version, so we'll try to see if "QUEENS BLVD EXP" fills the screen completely.

The R142s have a fixed number of slots (20, I believe) for characters on their side signs, but the R160s just have a collection of pixels, like all the cars' interior end signs, so they're more variable.

Approximately 17 is the character limit.

We've learned it doesn't always work. And apparently, the R-160 side signs will automatically scroll if you go over.

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
Can anyone tell how many characters pixels it exceeds the screen limit by?

Okay, let's count pixels here.

The text "QUEENS BLVD LOCAL" is positioned at the exact left edge of the display, and has two blank columns to the right of the final L.

Q: 7
U: 6
E: 5
N: 7
S: 6
[Space]: 3
B: 6
L: 5
V: 7
D: 6
O: 6
C: 6
A: 6

So, "QUEENS BLVD LOCAL", taking into account one blank column of pixels after each character is…
7+1+6+1+5+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+3+1+6+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+3+1+5+1+6+1+6+1+6+1+5 = 110
Q   U   E   E   N   S   _   B   L   V   D   _   L   O   C   A   L

Add the two columns to the right of the final L, and you get a total of 112. That's the maximum pixel width the message can have without scrolling.

Let's add some other characters into the mix:
X: 7
P: 6
R: 6
W: 7
Y: 6
I: 2
4: 7
/: 6
2: 6
1: 4
-: 6
T: 6
G: 6

The string "QUEENS BLVD EXPRESS" would be…

7+1+6+1+5+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+3+1+6+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+3+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+6+1+5+1+6+1+6 = 125
Q   U   E   E   N   S   _   B   L   V   D   _   E   X   P   R   E   S   S

Let's consider other strings and their pixel widths:
21 ST-QUEENSBRIDGE: 115
BROADWAY/4 AV EXP: 114
BROADWAY EXPRESS: 111

Any others?

That's excellent information, thanks! Apparently "BROADWAY EXPRESS" fits without scrolling as I thought I saw.

In your post, how did you get the text below the numbers to line up perfectly with the numbers above? When I try to include several spaces, they get compressed and the lines no longer line up. Even when I copy-and-paste yours, the same thing happens:

7+1+6+1+5+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+3+1+6+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+3+1+5+1+7+1+6+1+6+1+5+1+6+1+6 = 125
Q U E E N S _ B L V D _ E X P R E S S

I used non-breaking spaces ( ), which don't collapse into a single space like regular space characters do. They tend not to copy well either.

Thanks. I noticed that when I viewed your source and I tried using them too but it didn't work. I'm going to try again:

7+1+6+1+5+1+5+1+7+1+6
Q   U   E   E   N   S

It's not working. The spaces are still compressing. I used three space symbols between each letter but they don't line up correctly. Am I doing something wrong?
