The R-38s in the 4140-4149 had differing brake systems. Cars 4140 and 4141 (married pair) sounded like a regular 38, but the higher numbered ones had a very different air brake sound.

I remember the last 10 of the R-38s and don’t recall any difference in the braking systems of any of them as built. I had heard that 8 of them were retrofitted sometime later with NYAB brakes which may explain the difference in the sound.

Standards, Triplexes, Q-Types, and Lo-Vs. Back in the 1960s when we came east to visit relatives, and the Fair in 1964.

My Chicago "L" experience goes back to the 4000s; I even commuted on them for about three years, 1969-72, on the Evanston Express from Rogers Park to the Loop. As a kid I'm sure I must have seen the wooden cars (which were retired in 1957), but I don't recall ever riding them.

I rode on 4000s, but my first solo trip was on 6000s. I was forbidden as a kid to ride the woodies; thus never sampled either the Stockyards or Kenwood though I had an uncle very close to the Kenwood Branch.

The oldest I can remember riding were the R-10s, but I may have rode the arnines when I was too young too remember. I rode the R-10s well into my teens and pretty much everything that came after them. I don't know if I rode the R-34s, it's possible we may have taken that train when it ran on the Prospect Park shuttle, for our trips to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. R-12s, R-14s and R-15s we took to the Bronx Zoo. Then the 80s saw us riding the R-16 through R-46 range throughout the various points of the system.

Today, for the first time in my life I rode the BMT gate cars. Last year I rode the Triplexes and the Standards for the first time, those cars were before my time. Those were fan trips, so they don't count. I still haven't rode the World's Fair Low-V, of which only one remains in existence, laid up either at Coney or 207, I forgot which.

I remember the 4000s on the Evanston Express very well; I could tell them apart from the 6000s by the sounds. I asked my aunt once if we could ride on an Evanston Express and all she said was, "It doesn't stop anywhere." Well, back then, it ran nonstop from Howard to Merchandise Mart.

Same. On the C, of course. I was also extremely small at the time, but I remember it clearly.

R-15s in their last days on a family trip to New York in 1984. I only know that because the only distinct memory I have of that first subway ride was porthole windows in the side doors.
