If FB did anything right, it made a certain helpful Subchatter point out John West's photos. Here's another one.

The Skokie Valley portion, right? The Shoreline segment was abandoned in 1955, IIRC.

Geeze, I missed that white hat!

Noticed something about the headlight..looks like they are removable
and wires plug in the front of the car. Also saw this same arrangement on the Blimps in another topic.

Have not read or know much etc. about these routes. I think that CERA publishhed at least one book about them correct?

What was the name for this interruban fleet - official and/or unofficial. Any specific book(s) to about them to recommend?

I figure if I can get the name this type of interurban, I can at the very least vind a wiki article about it.*
Thanks.

*just thought of this - if there is a wiki article, then there will hopefully be a bibliography at the bottom of it.

A quick look through Middleton's "The Interurban Era" and Hilton & Due's "The Electric Interurban in America" shows that the majority of interurbans had their headlights mounted low.

I've never heard the reason for it, but it might be that due to street running, they'd want the headlights mounted more or less where a streetcar headlight would be.

In addition, a roof-mounted light might interfere with the movement of the trolley retriever rope. Arguing against this, though, is the use of low, door-mounted headlights on pantograph cars, like the Key System; and also the presence of roof-mounted destination signs on Pacific Electric cars, which would seem to present the same problem for the retriever rope.

The North Shore, and many other lines, didn't always install the portable headlights on daytime runs; odd especially for a line like the North Shore which was concerned about grade crossing accidents.

And a final note about North Shore headlights: I remember when the line was abandoned reading in the paper that passengers used to hope to see a dim headlight as the train approached, because that meant the interior lights would be bright enough to read by.

I'd also recommend William Middleton's "North Shore: America's Fastest Interurban."

Anyone with an interest in Chicago area interurbans, rapid transit, trolleys, and railroads should consider joining the Shore Line Interurban Historical Society. They publish an excellent quarterly journal, "First & Fastest", as well as a series of publications on various topics.

Years ago I remember thumbing through a book about the North Shore and it had a photo of a train of 4000-series L cars running down the middle of the street of some town on the Shore Line route, trolley poles raised. IINM 4000-series cars were used to supplement service to Great Lakes.

To be picky, the North Shore diverged from the Evanston "L" a short distance south of Linden station, bypassing the station and yard.

CERA Bulletins 106, /Interurban to Milwaukee/, and 107, /Route of the Electroliners/. Also, more recently, Bulletin 141, /Before the North Shore Line/, covering the Chicago & Milwaukee Electric and predecessors down to 1916. If you can find them, George V. Campbell's /North Shore Line Memories/ and /Days of the North Shore Line/ are also recommended.
